The deserts of Athas seem to have quite a bit of water in them...

Yeah. It seems strange and is likely that they didn't want to work harder to provide extra unique desert tiles.

However, I imagine the rationale is that a lot of action is going to take place around oasis or other important plot-element water locations. These are important spots, and likely to be places where encounters happen.

This. It's the same reason why starship battles always seem to occur in or near star systems, despite the fact that the overwhelming majority of space is empty. Battles just don't tend to happen in the middle of nowhere, because the chances of running into anyone else in a vast, featureless wilderness are virtually nil.

I think they also wanted to appeal to more players and not just desert/Dark Sun fans.
Most of the posters I've read will use the blue tiles as silt.

Honestly, I don't think the blue tiles are related to Dark Sun at all, even if you reimagine them as silt, just a way to sell them to others.

I don't buy the oasis theory either. If I create a campaign in Dark Sun and plan half of my encounters around oasis (to use both sides equally) I feel like I'm doing something wrong. I tend to use the more extreme climates, dust and sand, to reinforce that it is a harsh world.

But, that being said, I love the desert tiles side. And I bought 3 sets of them.

Just my 2 ceramic pieces.

I seem to have an extra little slotted gold tab. It looks like the short one under the knights tomb, but I used a short and long one for that. Any ideas what this extra tab is for?

I found this weird as well.  I know the farms around Tyr have ponds and irrigation etc, but I can't think of a single 2e encounter I ran round water.  Especially nothing with a sail boat.

You are doing something wrong.  At least 2/3 of your encounters should be around oases :P

But seriously, think about it: 90% of wilderness encounters are going to be with either beasts or bandits.  Both tend to be rather local in their range, generally no more than a half-day's walk from the water (possibly less).  Bandits in particular tend to be lazy in their habits, and since their prey is going to be coming to the water anyway, why not just stay near the oasis?  You get all the water you need, and the victim does all the work for you.  Win-win
