#1 Dungeoneering Dec 27, 2010 8:18:26	I would like to get some monster tokens or possibly minis for the DS game I'm running.  Sounds like a simple request, but I've had trouble coming up with something that works.  DS contains no goblinoid races and tons of lizard and insect-like creatures, but most token sets are orcs, orcs, orcs.  I don't want to spend a ton of money on this but would be willing to spend some if I could get a lot of reuse out of them.  Any suggestions?

#3 Ozmodious Dec 29, 2010 20:22:20	Cheap fix--- bought wooden tokens from Hobby Lobby numbered them on both sides and put a colored ring on both sides. so I have 7 red, 15 blue, 4 green, etc. On the opposite side I put the same number and color ring and added Bloodied so I could just flip the monster over when bloodied. Markers and wooden tokens ran me 20 bucks and have more than I need. My players use minatures to represent themselves and the wooden tokens for the monsters ( even have NPC tokens). The Wooden tokens also come in 2" for large creatures as well. I decided this route when I attempted to purchase minatures for dark sun- -- very expensive way to go. Everyone likes it and have had no complaints from my group.
#4 Bera Dec 30, 2010 2:06:30	Minis are a little expensive and its hard to find a lot that are DS appropriate. Minis which depict little or no metal aren't common, and Ebay is virutually bankrupt of original DS minis since the books came out in August. Your best bet is to start out with something really flexible that you can always use in a pinch. I'd start out by getting a battlemat and markers and printing tokens if you don't have any minis. You'll never always have the perfect mini or token anyways, so having something flexible as a back-up is always useful. Ripping up paper and writiing "Tarek 1" on it is easy. Its not hard to get some cardstock to print on and steal the images from dragon articles and the DS previews. Grab some free software and you can easily resize, print, and cut out some tokens. You can even get 1inch and 2inch hole punches from craft stores which make token making reasonably easy. Those circle punches look a bit neater than hand-cut not-quite-squares if you want. If that seems like too much work you could make do with any number of colored tokes or pieces from other games. When you spend a lot of time staring at battlefield configurations though, its nice to have them represented well (and at least accurately). You might consider asking the players to find their own minis to use and/or pitch in to buy some minis to use as monsters. If players pitch in $5 here or there its not difficult to build up a nice collection in a few months. And, come on, the DM does a lot of work and deserves a present or two here and there. On sites like Troll and Toad or Auggie's you can take $25 and buy a decent number of generic minis (I think I found good luck with elves for some reason). Grab 4-8 of a few different common models for 50-99 cents each and you'll have a useable collection of medium-sized humanoids and non-humanoids easily. Large non-humanoid enemies are usually harder to find. There's still a few cheaper things that are generic-enough looking to pass as a variety of enemies though. A lot of people are intimidated by unpainted metal minis, but they're still nice unpainted (though it might take some work to put them on bases occasionally). You can always do something like paint your heros all in red or gold and all villians (or just shadow creatures?) in black to help distinguish things without worrying about being a master miniature painter.
#5 Feetz Dec 30, 2010 9:00:04	I print out my own tokens using the art galleries from WOTC.  I'm hoping WOTC wakes up and realizes how much money they could be making by releasing tokens.  I'd be all over some DS tokens.  If not WOTC, I'd love to see something DS related from Fiery Dragon.

I have been using alot of proxy's for specific DS miniatures. Kobolds for Silt Runners, Orcs for Tareks, Gorristro's for Braxat's but there is alot of DS Monsters that I can't find proxy's for. I'm all for a DS themed set of minis or even tokens (because I know not everyone uses minis), although I would personally rather see the minis.
#7 Bera Dec 31, 2010 17:43:16	I think its pretty bad the WotC hasn't released either a set of DS tokens or minis. Even a set of repainted minis drawn from their existing stock would help to enhance a DS game.

#9 Ozmodious Jan 01, 2011 10:32:53	I think WoTC needs to print tokens like they had for Encounters... except add monsters pictures to them and sell them in bundles. They would sell and are extremely useful. They are what inspired me to make my wooden tokens. Another thing that DM's recieved when running encouters that they should sell are Condition cards- a card the same size as playign cards that lists a condition with rules on them. Sell that for $20 a deck and they would sell fast... my players love them.

Trying to balance one mini on t'other so as to represent characters riding mounts has always been a bit of a juggle.  Size-appropriate flat tokens for kanks, inixes and crodlu would be nifty, and would work well with plastic minis. Just sayin'.

As Feetz said, using the art from the books to make tokens is probably the easiest thing to do right now. In the past I've used Shrinky Dinks with the art from the books to make some decent figures of Thri-Kreen and half-giants.  It's a bit of work, but worth it for the immersion.

#20 capntaco Jan 05, 2011 12:25:40	I just found a token maker at RPTools, it works alright, but it's meant for an online thing, so I'm still trying to figure out the scaling (for now, because I'm in a rush, I just reduce the scale of all of them when I was printing because I have a session in like two hours). But, yeah, I needed a few that quicktoturn hadn't done, so I just found this which is easy to use, aside from the scaling (it does things in pixels and I haven't figured out the proper ratio yet). But I imagine there's a few of these kinda programs out there.  And it's also be simple to make in a picture editing program, you'd just need the an empty token image, so a circle border with no monster in the middle. Does anyone think it'd be alright to start up, like, a token request/repository thread?

#22 az_st Jan 05, 2011 15:15:45	I'm a big fan of Fiery Dragon counter collections (www.fierydragon.com) and have purchased both the jpg packs and the cardboard sets. Very reasonable (esp if you go pdf or jpg) for having role appropriate amounts of tokens for every monster from all three Monster Manuals. No Darksun Creature Catalog or Monster Vault sets yet though. I ran the Darksun Encounters season using these and had appropriate tokens for every monster in the season. quicktoturn's tokens are great too.

#25 khorne37 Jan 06, 2011 10:32:10	The token genrator is the bomb. I now have DS style tokens for PC's and monsters and glued them onto other exisiting tokens. You can't tell them apart from regular tokens. Well that is a lie but they sure are nifty.

I also realized as I was searching for player tokens, that I have no warforged, gensai (I think) and  afew other player races, which only ticked me off more. How are all of you printing these tokens off, I have a token maker tool, but it looks to print 1 at a time.

Those are nice, I see you make the bigger creatures take up more squares, I do this as well with half giants and the like. I like your token border, is that token tool? I dont have that border.
