So I ran the free rpg game with my group... now preparing to play the Dungeon Magazine adventure before running the rescently released Dark Sun module. As I began looking everything over I noticed that treasure is not much different than any other world. by the time they reach 3rd level most of my group will have 2 magic items ( and I have 8 players).
I had planned on keeping the magic items to a minimal so should I just cut down magic items even more when I run my own games and give what is suggested in the prewritten adventures? I like the ideas of using Boons and Favors as rewards and I had planned on incorperating those features ( DMG 2) but was just a little shocked at the amount of treasure handed out in the offical games.
I dont want to be a cut throat DM but I would like magic items to be something special and not something expected. On the other hand I dont want to seem like I am just doing this to be giving the monsters an edge by not allowing an asortment of items to drop form which the players can choose....Heck even taking away the 2 parcels as suggesting in the campaign guide seems like a lot of treasure for Dark Sun.

I would suggest using the inherent bonus system in the dark sun book and limiting magic items.  I can't recall the page, atm, though, sorry.  if you can't find it, its also in the DMG2 under alternate rewards.
