Dec 14, 2010 11:44:20 In my campaign, my players will soon be forced to face soldiers from the Urikite army.
I was wondering if there was some reference somewhere as to what kind of equipment (mainly armor and weapons) the soldiers of Urik usually carried.
I assume their weapons would be made of obsidian since it is one of the main ressources of the city-state, but apart from that, I do not know.

Dec 14, 2010 11:49:14 2nd book in Prism Pentand is Crimson Legion and details Tyrian legion vs Urik.

Most would be obsidian spears & short swords. They also had archers. I dont remember mention of armors.

I might consider making a little more imaginative. Maybe throw in some fanatical warrior-templar, gigantic well-trained (mekillot?) beasts of war, war machines, or some arcane animatrons.

Dec 16, 2010 17:17:26 Urik strikes me as a bit more spartan than Persia. It's in the middle of the desert, more so than any other city-state.

The power of the Urikite army, in my interpretation, comes from the leadership of Hamanu, the great morale he instills in his troops, the elite half-giant brigade, and the halfling spies/espionage team.

The warriors are scantily clad, wearing mostly small pieces of chitin armor (if that), otherwise a loin cloth and a maybe few leather pads. Obsidian spears, wooden shields... stone hammers or obsidian axes for the HG's. The artillery comes in the form of psion and defiler templars. And that's it.

The slave portion of that army is the meat shield, up front and ready to get mowed down by the first line defenses of Raam or Tyr.

Spartans always wore heavy armor though...which is why they decimated the lightly armored persians in a chokehold.

I picture Hamanau as a medium to heavy armor kinda guy

My Urik is similar to the Babylonians and Assyrians (for obvious reasons). They have chainmail (the Babylonian-accurate choice) or scale (a more likely choice on Athas), helmets, short swords, daggers, spears, and shields. They also have access to cavalry, chariots, and archers (as well as the combination of mounted bowmen).

My Urik is similar to the Babylonians and Assyrians (for obvious reasons). They have chainmail (the Babylonian-accurate choice) or scale (a more likely choice on Athas), helmets, short swords, daggers, spears, and shields. They also have access to cavalry, chariots, and archers (as well as the combination of mounted bowmen).

For fun and flavor, have one of the Uriki noble houses send along a contingent of slingers. This would work well for a Sumerian (even older than Assyria / Babylonia) aspect. The slingstones could have words carved into them - obviously magic, right, or why bother? If you read them, they say "big bruiser", "bonebreaker", "headache", "take this, {epithet}", "flee my awesome wrath", or something similar. Of course, you could have a few that say "Unerring Aim", "Spider", "Thunder", or any of the other magic ammunition types ... because they ARE.
