What is a Gaj?

My actual Eberron campaign is focusing on Xoriat and aberrants, so I was searching for some aberrant monsters, and saw the Gaj's sheet on July preview. The monster stats is awesome, and I'll use it on tonight's session as a dire mindflayer (with some minor changes).

But just for the sake of curiosity... what exactly is a Gaj? Appearance, ecology, and such (a picture would be welcome). I did a google search, but looks like few sites explain anything to new players on Dark Sun, and the ones who do, dont get details on this monster.

From 2e Wanderer's Journal: "The Gaj is a psionic horror. Physically, it appears as a large reptile resembling a beetle in appearance. Its body is covered by a scaly, rust-orange shell about six feet in diameter. From beneath its shell protrude six four-jointed legs which end in webbed feet with long, sharp claws. Its head is a spongy white globe about two feet in diameter. Spaced at even intervals around the head are six compound eyes. A pair of barbed mandibles as long as a man's arms flank six finger-like appendages that hang over its mouth, and three feathery stalks rise from the top of the head."

Jul 17, 2010 10:39:08 Despite being an aberration, I don't think you'd find any proper gajs in Xoriat. Dire Mind Flayer could work.

Gajs, like everything unique to Athas, are desert creatures. Basically a large reptilian beetle with psionic powers, rusty orange shell about six feet wide, six four-pointed and web-footed legs, a round head with six compound eyes at equal intervals (360 vision!), and mandibles about the size of your arm. They're pretty solitary (although sometimes they live with a mate), and live either among rocks where they have camoflague, or in sand where they can burrow and hide.

They're carnivorous, and I guess you could also call them memevorous, as they also derive sustenance from the thoughts of others and will starve to death if they don't probe some minds after a week or so.
