| #1cerberuspuppyJun 02, 2010 17:08:04 | So, when the new books come out and you start your new campaigns, what do you plan to play? |
| #2branothebladesJun 02, 2010 17:22:42 | I want to play them all! However, right now I'm contemplating a half-elf battlemind (or maybe a battlemind/ardent hybrid). This depends too on how the new races stack up. I'd like to use either the gladiator or some psionic theme. I had a multiclass goliath bard/warlock that was a lot of fun as an atypical character in my regular game. Perhaps something like that could be an interesting twist. |
| #3cerberuspuppyJun 02, 2010 17:28:09 | I think I'd play something psionic, probably a Battlemind. Maybe a Thri-Kreen. |
| #4digglesJun 02, 2010 17:29:18 | I'll be DM'ing my first campaign, but if I was playing I would love to be a Monk in the Darksun settings. Never have to worry about broken weapons when I AM THE WEAPON! |
| #5qorvusJun 02, 2010 17:41:58 | Either a Mul or Thri-kreen of a psionic nature and possibly gladiator theme. |
| #6sir_sparhawkJun 02, 2010 19:15:26 | I have to recreate my most prized character of all: Volin Dustdune - 2e Elemental Priest/Psionicist 4e Shaman, Elemental Priest Theme |
| #7ascottbayJun 02, 2010 21:56:14 | I recently built a melee warlock that's not too bad with basic attacks, which could be invaluable in Dark Sun. I suppose I should try to pull it off as a warlock/rogue or something, since he should only be using magic when it really, really matters. |
| #8formosusJun 02, 2010 22:00:49 | I'm not sure what class I want to play, but I definitely want to play a Mul. Unfortunately I won't get to play in a regular campaign (at least right away). I am limited to D&D Encounters. I asked our DM tonight if the pre-gen characters were the same quality as the ones that were made for Undermountain, and he said they were. This makes me a sad panda . |
| #9lmchughJun 02, 2010 23:05:14 | Thri-kreen monk, the 4 armed flurry of blows makes me giggle! |
| #10Duke5150Jun 03, 2010 1:07:41 | I'm going to try and recreate my old 2e mul gladiator with his artifact battleaxe, "bloodlust" at 18th level and see what he looks like in 4e. As for what I'm going to play? I have no idea. I am the only darksun DM in my group, so I need to find someone who knows and loves DS as much as me. I wouldn't enjoy playing in a ds game if the dm didn't know darksun, in and out. |
| #11beej_silverJun 03, 2010 6:02:56 | My first ad only experience as a Dark Sun player was with the 3.5E, and it ended rather prematurely after our intense DM-vs-player mentality came to its climax. But I really liked my character then - Apoei, former Veiled Alliance, burned to near death but energized by the fire spirit, he was transformed into an elan and became master and slave to flame. I think I had him designed as a wizard MC psion with a dragon mag-PrC that was just a little bit stronger than the cerebremancer. He had dreams of becoming a sorcerer-king himself (but was geared for the Dragon King Epic PrC). I rarely get off-duty as the DM, but if I do get the chane, I'll remake Apoei as a Revenant this time. Actually having been killed by the fire with the rest of his veiled friends, but ressurected by its spirit to become its agent, Apoei sounds about right as a Wizard|Psion hybrid. Lots of pyro from wizardry and more subtle attacks with psionics when in cities. Might go for the Wasteland Nomad theme, and let him wander around in his pristine white cloak. XD |
| #12gangisconnJun 03, 2010 6:39:25 | If my life long DM who loves Dark Sun moves close by this year I might get a chance to play, and if I do I think I'll make an arcane PC. I like the 4e version of defiling magic, and I like the hostility towards magic in Dark Sun. My first Dark Sun character a long time back was a Thri-kreen who ended up eating a half-elven NPC. I want to play something a little more subtle this time around. Maybe a Human Sorcerer who does his best to downplay his arcane side, but has a strong temptation to defile. He might be a kind of magic junkie; holding back until he feels like he will explode, and finally, unable to control himself, unleashes his anger wildly, and defiling for that extra boost. Ok, that might not be any more subtle than a desert crazed bug who eats the party's NPC companion, but might be just as fun. |
| #13GrummoreJun 03, 2010 7:09:29 | I am the Darksun GM usually... Sooo my first 4E character if I ever play 4E will be every characters except the PC . |
| #14EmersziJun 03, 2010 9:27:13 | I'm rebranding my old Elven Air Cleric into an Elemental Priest (air) Monk. I'll take powers that focus on movement and and go multiclass Seeker (for Nature skill, and a cool "air" power), get ritual casting, and do the one with the air thing. |
| #15WerTwistJun 03, 2010 11:10:26 | My character will be a Thri-Kreen of as of yet undecided class... Maybe I'll make him a ranger like my Kreen back in the day... But that fond memory is slightly scarred by the fact that my character was the only one with a good alignment in the group... If you've seen Dorkness rising, think of the Paladin that was always sent away when the group 'planned' something. ![]() |
| #16MithrusJun 03, 2010 12:45:01 | My character will be a Thri-Kreen of as of yet undecided class... Maybe I'll make him a ranger like my Kreen back in the day... Heh, I also had a thri-kreen ranger that was a lot of fun. My first character will definately be a thri-kreen, class undetermined. I'd love to make a thri-kreen pursuit avenger, which would mean bending the "no divine power source" bit about DS, but I think the class could simply be made "primal" and be just fine. As I plan on DMing the campaign initially, I will likely have to keep him an NPC at first My gaming friends aren't all that excited about 4E, but I think DS will be a good showcase world to make them reconsider. They are very resistant to battlemaps in general, but I would LOVE to see us use battlemaps in our WoD and Shadowrun games...sigh. |
| #17NyarlathotepJun 03, 2010 14:59:42 | I will almost certainly be DMing so I won't likely get to play anything, but on the off chance I can talk someone else into taking over for a while, I have an idea for a hybrid Psion|Sorcerer-King Warlock. An ex-member of a force of psychic spies. Forced out for reasons I have yet to determine. Yeah, Psion|Warlock isn't the zenith of optimization, but what the hey. It fits thematically, I think I can make it at least decent mechanically if not fantastic, and I think it will be fun. |
| #18xlorep_darkhelmJun 03, 2010 15:43:22 | While typically I am the DM of every game I participate in, I still like to create characters, and the thought of a Mul Ranger seems most appealing to me, for some reason. |
| #19cmdlukeJun 03, 2010 17:16:04 | either thri-kreen or revenant thri-kreen poison assassin. not sure what theme yet. |
| #20drackcoveJun 03, 2010 17:16:51 | Cindersoul Genasi Swordmage with the gladiater theme I'll let the implications sink in. |
| #21PennarinJun 03, 2010 17:35:11 | Definitly revenant, either assasin or some kind of shadow power source class when it becomes available. |
| #22AegeriJun 03, 2010 18:34:19 | I'll be the DM when I'm running dark sun but I would run a templar sorcerer if I was playing. Lots of defiling. |
| #23kingdrewJun 03, 2010 21:54:52 | I will be DM ing as i am the only one in my group that has ever ran Dark Sun. But if I could I'd make a Halfling Druid or Warlord. |
| #24warlock_devilkillJun 05, 2010 11:28:57 | I dont have the DS books so i dont know if i can play this but i'll probably play a tiefling assassin if i cant play that probably a half-elf psion. |
| #25Duke5150Jun 05, 2010 12:47:58 | A gnome paladin.![]() |
| #26zylo_drizztJun 05, 2010 14:53:07 | everything! There is never just one thing I want to play. Though most certainly a defender because I like to be the one dishing and taking hits right at the very center of battle. I have never liked the arcane power source and I dont want to play an assasin so I am likely only to play martial psionic or primal and probably not a monk in psionic unless I take a psionic theme (pretty much always will). If I am going to play arcane then almost always a templar. Tops are probably Battlemind gladiator or psionic theme, fighter with gladiator or psionic theme and warden with gladiator or psionic or nature related theme. Hopefully some unique pp and ed, dont really want a rehash of old though many might have to be changed flavorfully in order to fit. |
| #27603Jun 06, 2010 12:26:56 | I'm thinking about a bard... |
| #28duncfooJun 06, 2010 15:42:52 | I always make a character for each role... most excited for the first one though: Halfling Druid (Wild Shape Focus) / Rogue Slave; Dropping more rogue stuff as leveling up. Low on Con d/t Silt Sickness when young and getting beaten when enslaved. Force myself to deal with some of the survival play, some cannibalism. I've got a good backstory for him. Battlemind Human Templar w/ a big obsidian club and malformed face; Always wearing a dust cowl, silent because of oversized tongue and jaw, Eventually hoping for Outcast because of moral complications Elven Warlock (Star Pact) Tribal; Very distrusting but afraid of being alone, Constant Liar Dwarven Warden, Focus of Reversing the Silt Sea Expansion, Gladiator Slave; Played as emotional wreck I DM most of the time and I've got a good friend planning to run so I may be over excited... |
| #29dreamdarwinJun 06, 2010 20:00:36 | Thri-kreen. No clue what... but definately Thri-kreen. Maybe a Ranger, Rogue, or Barbarian. Hell, maybe even a Fighter. Who knows! |
| #30ascottbayJun 09, 2010 0:42:27 | While it'll probably get tweaked when the books come out (especially to take advantage of themes), I rebuilt my melee conlock as a Battlemind/Warlock hybrid. Psionic at-wills with an arcane daily: The Lash's Bite. Flavor text for this power: "You rip vital energy from your enemy and cause it to ache deeply at the resulting loss." But it gets better. On a miss you can choose to take damage and try the power again next turn (with an attack bonus). I'd play that up as self-defiling. It makes defiling (or at least this particular defiler) seem kind of noble in a crazy, reckless way. Maybe he doesn't preserve because he can't figure it out, so he does the "next best thing" and defiles himself before the environment or his friends. |
| #31mouthymercJun 09, 2010 8:24:17 | I'm thinking about a bard... Yes. A bard with the Alchemy and Poisoner feats would fit in very nicely. |
| #32Zackmack75Jun 09, 2010 10:03:52 | I'm the DM for my group as well. So far we have a Mul Stormwarden, a Half-Elf Rogue, a Human Paladin (he's actually sponsored by a DS, but he doesn't know it), and a Human Assassin/Ardent Hybrid. I'd like to make either a Half-Giant (Goliath) Seeker or a Halfling Barbarian. I love the idea of a huge guy who throws spirit empowered hammers at people or a raging little guy cannibal who just tears everyone up. |

| #34EarthdawnJun 10, 2010 8:10:58 | Definitly revenant, either assasin or some kind of shadow power source class when it becomes available. Oh... Revenant! That got me to thinking. If arcane magic is so despised in Darksun, I'd play a Revenant with an arcane class! "Yeah... they killed me. So what?! I came back." |
| #35johnkretzerJun 10, 2010 13:16:21 | I have a couple...all Elven though. Elven Rogue. Elven Psion/ Rogue hybrid...though I have no idea about the powerlevel of the character...but have to admitt never really cared about it that much if I like the concept enough. Elven Wizard. |
| #36aegishjalmurJun 10, 2010 18:44:53 | If I get to play rather than running a game, I just want a straight up Half-Elf Wizard Preserver just like I had in AD&D 2ed. I might eschew a Veiled Alliance template due to his massive paranoia causing him to mistrust any groups beyond his immediate party members. |
| #37robbieeJun 11, 2010 16:59:59 | I want to play a Genasi Cinder/Firesoul (extra and then dual manifestation) Taclord, Elemental priest theme and just be one of the fickle primal spirits that druids draw power from. I love the flavour of the burning man wandering the burning wastes. One of my friends wants to play a warforged made of steel that fell into athas somehow (one way rift or something) and is now in a desperate fight for his own survival with regards to the value of its body. |
| #38masterofdr%40gonsJun 11, 2010 17:17:05 | i'm going to make a half elf bard, templar and if the party crosses my sorcerer king i'll secretly help my sorcerer king find them and give away their tactics etc... |
| #39branothebladesJun 14, 2010 17:31:04 | I finally got ahold of Martial Power 2. Now I'm thinking about a goliath brawling fighter or a mul marauding ranger. |
| #40labcoatmanJun 14, 2010 21:04:18 | I'm usually the DM, and will probably only get to do a Dark Sun one-shot in any case, but if I did get to play, I'd love to be a thri-kreen ranger. I usually play humans but I love the alien nature of the mantis men, and ranger really seems to fit them nicely. |
| #41apoxonJun 14, 2010 21:10:12 | Human Templar Defiler. We all serve King Kalak in our own way. |
| #42nightchillJun 15, 2010 2:34:35 | Has there been any mention of Avengers? I realise Gods are silent and there are likely no divine classes. However I could see Avengers fitting, thematically, into a sort of angry-elemental-smiter-type. Failing that, probably something psionic ;) |
| #43JacekJun 15, 2010 19:30:07 | I´m going to honor Jacek, have made several short stories about him. Can´t wait to do my Human, Warlord theme Templar, long live Hamanu the King of the Mountain, King of the World. |
| #44xlorep_darkhelmJun 16, 2010 15:47:52 | After a bit of consideration and digging through materials a bit, I think I'll change mine to being Oguler Denju, a Half-Giant Beastmaster Ranger with the Wilder theme, and his trusty Klar companion "Bar". (for the unschooled, a Klar is basically a psionic dire bear) Now, if I could get into a play by email or play by message board game, that would be cool. Actually being a player rather than a DM would be an interesting change. |
| #45ian.thomsonJun 16, 2010 16:33:26 | I'm going to be DMing since I was the only person in my group that heard of Dark Sun before they announced it was going to be the new setting. If I were playing, I'd like to play a Dray Templar of Dregoth (Dragonborn Warlock, maybe Revenant). Intimidate score of "YES," so high it can substitute for Bluff and Diplomacy. Or for the lulz, Wilden Warlock (yes defiling) with the elemental priest theme (if possible), that believes the ashes left from defiling is a sign that the world is burning (and thus returning to the fire it belongs to). Maybe go with the idea that some other character tried to become an elemental priest, but the ritual went wrong and the wood in the pyre was what became the elemental priest. A friend and I have discussed the idea of a Githzerai Cleric whose spelljammer crashed. I also want to play a hybrid Monk/Psion, and take the Dreamwalker paragon path (Oh, I'm sorry, you thought you were fighting me? No, I'm over here). Probably human, maybe Eladrin. |
| #46JohnCJJun 16, 2010 20:41:09 | Human Rogue (Templar). I will stab your kidneys for the greater glory of the Sorcerer King. |
| #47firesnakeariesJun 16, 2010 22:47:47 | My first official 4E Dark Sun character is going to be either a Thri-Kreen Druid, or a Thri-Kreen Shaman. |
| #48Raddu76Jun 18, 2010 14:22:35 | I'm thinking of an Elf Warden , or a Mul Barbarian Wastelander, what can I say...I like the basic archtypes. |
| #49ian.thomsonJun 18, 2010 18:04:31 | I also want to play a hybrid Monk/Psion, and take the Dreamwalker paragon path (Oh, I'm sorry, you thought you were fighting me? No, I'm over here). Probably human, maybe Eladrin. Well, finished as much as I can making the Monk|Psion. Freder Trend, level one human with the Merchant Prince background (for now). AFAIK, now I just need to apply a theme to him when the book comes out, and maybe modify his equipment. Basically, he's the son of a wealthy merchant, good alignment mostly from being too apathetic to judge (goodbye Lawful Good), too lazy to cause trouble (goodbye evil and chaotic evil), but too bored to not help (goodbye unaligned). Freder's father is from Nibenay, his mother from Balic, and Freder has spent his childhood in various regions, mostly Gulg, Nibenay, and Raam. From Balic he learned of democracy (even if it's not really in effect there), from Nibenay he picked up the younger people's sense of honor (well, sort of), from Gulg a respect for nature, and from Raam a sense of freedom of ...even if he doesn't have much to express). He has no hatred for the sorcerer kings, although he does tend to see them only as politically powerful kings and not much else. The truth that they are draconic defilers would probably be as shocking to him as it would to the most fervant worshipper. When his (unaligned, borderline evil) father saw Freder's psionic gift at a young age, he sent Freder to the best school in the hopes that he would become an empath. Unfortunately, Freder was too apathetic to find out what people were thinking and too nice to take control of their minds, so he ended up focusing on telekinetics. Being gifted but a bit lazy, short ranged but powerful telekinesis was all he could really manage (Centered flurry, force punch, kinetic trawl for the extra power points, masterful spiral). Despite being rather dull and unnoticable (i.e. 8 cha, trained in stealth), he is nice and does have a decent working knowledge of psychology and sociology (i.e. trained in diplomacy, bluff, and insight). If you ask his father, Freder finished with all of the training the academy could provide at 16, and has spent the next seven years amassing a fortune, which isn't showing because he is hiding it for his protection and investing it shrewdly. In reality, Freder is just sort of drifting, making enough money to live on comfortably. Nobles and inkeepers who know him tend to believe his father's view, and feel glad that he only asked for a room for a night and maybe a meal. The poor who have encountered him also believe he is wealthy, for he's one of the few people to be charitable. In reality, he believes the best way to hide wealth is to get rid of it and make it again somewhere else, so he leeches some wealth from the rich upon arriving to a town, and gets rid of what he can't use upon leaving so he can travel lighter. He usually wears a custom made silk shirt and pant one piece, rasclinn skin belt and boots, and sometimes a hooded sandy poncho/cloak thing that can either look ratty or fashionably unique. |
| #50RalofTyrJun 21, 2010 1:15:29 | I have no 4e characters in mind; I'm happy with 2e. |
| #51MrCelsiusJun 21, 2010 4:35:34 | I've done a bit of work on a Monk|Ranger that I planned Githzerai, but could well make Thri-Kreen if the crunch lines up in a pleasing fashion. It's been nearly a decade since I delved into DS, so I'll have to wait for the books to hit so I can refresh myself and find inspiration.I have no 4e characters in mind; I'm happy with 2e. | #52visanidethdmJun 21, 2010 6:39:22 | I've done a bit of work on a Monk|Ranger that I planned Githzerai, but could well make Thri-Kreen if the crunch lines up in a pleasing fashion. It's been nearly a decade since I delved into DS, so I'll have to wait for the books to hit so I can refresh myself and find inspiration.I have no 4e characters in mind; I'm happy with 2e. I'm gonna DM as usual, but if I could, I'd recreate my Dray Defiling Wizard (would be Sorc in 4e given his background) or my first Dark Sun character, Ash. Ash was your average half giant, dumb as a rock and big as a house. He was mute. He was fighting with a very big, very dull obsidian greatsword (something my DM described as a "tombstone on a stick") and during a gladiatorial game, he lost his right hand, which he replaced with wristblade. Later on, his face was burned by an acid spell from a Nibenay templar, and he sculpted and grafted a bone mask on his deformed face (something that looked either a skull or a very crude bone hockey mask). He gloriously died at level 14 evading from Nibenay's prison... he tore down a wall and foundt himself in the guard barracks. The bodycount was impressive. |
| #53fatherofthemoonsJun 21, 2010 11:31:28 | I'm thinking I may go with a Dray Battlemind, seeing as I want to make mine a bit more rough and tough, giving him the ability to be a brutal slaver who messes with his slaves minds to keep them in line. I'm looking forward to it honestly, the Evil-ish undertones give me something to work with Roleplaying wise while still being my two favourite things a Dragonborn(Dray) and a Defender. |
| #54xlorep_darkhelmJun 21, 2010 16:51:26 | Here's a quick story I wrote to sum up my ideas for my half-giant beastmaster ranger, Oguler Denju. |
| #55mouthymercJun 22, 2010 10:01:47 | Got a couple of ideas. A dwarf ardent and a half-elf fighter which are from way back in the day when I first got the set. Back then, though, the dwarf ardent was a dwarf psionicist (then a dwarf psion in 3E). The half-elf has gone from gladiator to fighter but his schtick has remained the same; dual-wieldiing tortoise blades (which in this edition would amount to spiked shields). Never had a chance to play either, though. |
| #56grimjawsAug 09, 2010 10:40:34 | I played a half giant battlemind in the arena battles at GenCOn 2010. It wasn't perhaps the most optimised combination but served me well enough to earn the glory needed for the map of the Tablelands. As a side note, I cannot wait to get my hands on Psionic Power and see what improvements have been made to the psionic classes. |
| #57slashdevnullAug 09, 2010 19:19:48 | I'm the DM for my group as well. So far we have a Mul Stormwarden, a Half-Elf Rogue, a Human Paladin (he's actually sponsored by a DS, but he doesn't know it), and a Human Assassin/Ardent Hybrid. I'll also be DMing for my group, but I'll be encouraging at least one player to consider the Halfling Barbarian. I think it's a combo with lots of opportunity for roleplay, in and out of combat. |
| #58gwydion9Aug 09, 2010 22:49:46 | So, when the new books come out and you start your new campaigns, what do you plan to play? Human preserver with the veiled alliance theme. I dunno, I just like the idea of having a lot of secrets. ![]() |
| #59theamnesiacAug 10, 2010 4:15:47 | Thri-kreen Arena Fighter, going for versatility in weapon choice (If one breaks, just grab another). I had originally planned on taking the Gladiator theme, but the level 5 daily for Veiled Alliance is awfully tempting. What amounts to a close burst 5 mark, with a further -2 penalty to opportunity and immediate actions? With the Implement being easily taken care of by inherent bonuses? Yes please thank you. The fact that it does damage as well is gravy. I can see him being subservient to the Veiled Alliance Wizard in his "clutch" and following his lead by picking up some magic. |

Originally from Urik, Davian has been exiled to the desert wastes since his youth for reasons he does not fully understand. His mother and grandfather, a one-time Templar of Hamanu, had been banished with him. The old man taught him about combat and the arcane, but neither adult survived long on the burning sands. Somehow, Davian has survived into adulthood on his own, honing his abilities on the monsters and the villains of the desert lands. Anyone know of any good builds that they would recommend? After reading yesterday's Dark Sun article, Templars of the Sorcerer-Kings, you could go with a human shaman with the Pact Initiate (Sorcerer-King) and Spirit Talker of Lalali-Puy feats and the templar theme. That would make a good templar of Lalali-Puy, if you so chose. |
| #65chromeravenAug 14, 2010 10:40:09 | I'll be making a wastelander, either a Mul Barbarian or thri-kreen monk to go into that predator paragon path... I really like all of the themes, and have ideas for a Dune Trader, Athasian Minstrel, and Wilder that I'd like to play as well, but don't know how well that'll work out given the shortness of 4th Edition groups that I know of in my area. |
| #66distractingflareAug 14, 2010 23:25:12 | I'll be DMing, as per usual, but my girlfriend will be playing an Eldarin Warden (+Primal Guardian), looking for a new home after her tribe was wiped out by a defiler. We might play some one-shots with the others taking turns DMing. For those, I'm thinking of building a Human Psion (+Templar) - a reimagining of one of my previous characters, a jerk named Non who always tends to fall in with the wrong crowd until he defects back to the good guys. |

Some characters would be very fun to play in a dark, even 'evil'-themed campaign, while others would be more fun to play in a more 'heroic' campaign. For an 'evil' campaign, I'd love to play a templar of either Nibenay (assassin/bard) or Gulg (wizard/shaman). Human in either case. For a more 'heroic' campaign, a half-giant primal guardian druid sounds good. I tend to prefer leader and controller characters in general. The new arena fighter build also sounds interesting, and I've always liked the gladiator concept. It's another character that would work best in a more morally grey campaign, IMO. (Incidentally, I gave up on finding a picture of a female gladiator that wasn't just porn...) |
