I am playing at a store, and the person that runs the Adventure League says that the mines of phandelver and the books are not Adventure League legal. We have talked about this briefly and didnt want to cause conflict is there a specific page or sight that i can show him. so we can actually play the modules that they provide so we can expand our playing.

In this conversation there are some terms that need to be kept straight in order to have a meaningful discussion. Let's start by defining some of them.

"Encounters" — This is the special program that WotC has created so that new or traveling D&D players will always have a game to play on Wednesday nights, wherever they find a game store. These games are specifically for PCs levels 1-4 ("first tier" PCs). The adventures sanctioned for Encounters play have been The Lost Mines of Phandelver and the first three episodes of Horde of the Dragon Queen. (Any I missed here?)

"Expeditions" — A different series of adventures. Most of these are also for PCs of level 1-4, but they include at least one adventure so far for PCs of levels 5-10. These adventures can be run at any day or time, and are reported slightly differently by the store on the Wizards Event Reporter and show up slightly differently on the event calendar.

"Epics" — These are adventures that only run at significantly large conventions, such as Gen Con. They can't be ordered or played at game stores or home play, and the results from the premeire running of these events can affect the overall campaign story line.

"Casual Play" — Any of the above types of adventures run on a night OTHER than Wednesday night, or for PC's higher than 4th level. This is all still perfectly "Adventurers League Legal," but again, is listed slightly differently in the event calendar. Expeditions events are often run as casual play, as are episodes of Horde of the Dragon Queen past Episode 3, or any of The Rise of Tiamat, should the PCs be high enough level to play that one (at least 7th or 8th to begin).

"Home Play" — The Adventurers League has sanctioned Lost Mines of Phandelver, Horde of the Dragon Queen, and The Rise of Tiamat for play at home, without the auspices of a game store, providing that characters and play abide by the rules set forth in the Adventurers League Player's and DM's rules.

So the key to your game being "Adventurers League Legal" is to abide by all the rules in the Adventurers League rule sets. Your FLGS may be confusing the different categories of events (this is very common) and so misunderstanding what it means to be "legal" in this sense.

This page on the Wizards' site might provide more "official" info for your store. It explains what I did above, and specifically mentions Lost Mines of Phandelver from the starter set, Horde of the Dragon Queen, and The Rise of Tiamat. I hope you find this helpful.

Someone should make a chart for this, because I am still somewhat confused, not to even mention the game store and the folks there.  I have a strong feeling that most of the AL stuff going has been done "wrong" in relations with the AL rules.  The whole Encounters/Expedition/Adventurer's League probably could have been simplified.  Personally, I feel Wizard's goofed on this one, or perhaps maybe it's just me.

If the folks at the store are confused, have they registered with Wizards to receive the DM pdfs that go with each episode/session? If your DM does not have those, it cannot be run properly or legally. Also, Lost Mines of Phandelver has been labeled by Wizards as "evergreen", meaning that it will be legal for AL play no matter which season it is and a new character being run through it can always get credit.

In addition, Skerrit (aka Greg Marks, Ass. Resource Manager) has stated that Hoard of the Dragon QueenRise of Tiamat and the Tyranny of Dragons Expeditions modules will be legal for play next season. While such adventures may eventually be retired, they will not be retired for the foreseeable future

The store is registered and has access to all the Expedition materials via the Wizard site.  However, I still think all the different "tiers" or what nots lends to more confusion.  Today I had to make it clear to some players that what we are doing is NOT AL legal, so don't even bother with the logs.  Half the characters had rolled stats and the hoarding of the treasure by a few players was totally against AL rules (I totally understood why they kept track of party treasure though).

For our local community, it's fine.  I don't think there are all that many "real" "legal" AL groups in our state anyways.

Merric wrote a great article detailing some of the details of AL play. With pictures.

dndadventurersleague.org/adventures

You need the password however, which should be provided to you by your Store Rep.

There is a local hobby store in my town, how do I get them to sign up so I can run Adventure League there?
