Now, what if a wizard were to cast Gentle Repose upon said character immediately after death, extending the duration tha Revivify may be cast upon him by 10 days. Can the part then take that "preserved" body back to a spellcaster and pay the 300gp to cast Revivify as opposed to the full 1,250gp? |
| #2CahPahkahFeb 09, 2015 14:24:55 | Provided that the wizard in question actually had Gentle Repose prepared, I'd be fine with that as a DM.
It wouldn't work to cast it as a ritual, because the 10 minutes it takes to cast GP that way would put you outside of Revivify range on its own. |
| #3Mark_RuyleyFeb 09, 2015 14:37:47 | Sounds like a really good contingency spell to pick up then. Shame that it takes a prepared slot but its a nifty little health insurance policy. Now the rest of the party can focus on keeping enough money around to ressurect the wizard!

| #5UndrhilFeb 09, 2015 20:31:00 | The Acolyte background is *great* ... if you choose Kelemvor as your deity. There aren't many temples to many other deities in the areas in which AL mods take place. |
| #6TyranthraxusFeb 09, 2015 20:57:16 | Keep in mind in the new Season, that Mulmaster is also not Phlan and thus may not have a local temple to Kelemvor (In fact given the history of Mulmaster) this is unlikely. Bane had his biggest Cathedral here (not sure if it still exists) |
| #7SkerritFeb 10, 2015 5:44:04 | Bane's Cathedral still exist. There are many temples in Mulmaster but after Bane, there are big followings of Lovitar and Tymora. It will be included in the State of Mulmaster blog post when it eventually goes up. |
| #8mrsrockguruFeb 10, 2015 6:05:06 | As raise dead has a material cost of 500gp yet the retail cost of it is 1250gp, if this was allowable the Revivify would cost twice the amount of the materials 750gp. However GP is a spell to prevent corruption of the decease's flesh not a method of keeping the soul around until you can find a set of jump leads.

| #9PauperFeb 10, 2015 8:50:58 | Technically speaking, this would work, so long as gentle repose was cast within a minute of the character's death -- the spell notes that time spent under gentle repose doesn't "count against the time limit of spells such as raise dead." I'd rule that revivify counts as such a spell.
As noted by msrockguru above, the cost of revivify isn't listed in the ALPG, but would certainly be more than 300gp -- 300gp is the material component cost of the spell. For raise dead, the material component cost is 500gp (which is how much you pay if you're an Acolyte of the temple in question), but most people pay 1250gp for the spell.
Given this, the actual cost of revivify from a temple is likely to be closer to 750gp; a savings, yes, but not as huge a savings as you might think.

| #11PauperFeb 10, 2015 12:21:10 | The cost of having an NPC spellcaster cast a spell for you isn't a strict formula based on spell level -- see greater restoration in the ALPG, which is also a fifth level spell like raise dead but has only a 100gp component and only costs 450gp to have cast on you. Raise dead, despite being the same level, costs an extra 400gp even after taking the difference in material component into account.
With that said, until an official update to the ALPG is posted, a DM can justify any amount over the material component cost of the spell (so as to maintain a benefit for those characters with the Acolyte background).

| #18TyranthraxusFeb 17, 2015 19:40:59 | Part 3 occured in my game. It was the point in time where our game stopped being an AL game and just because a shop casual game. We now get people joining making 6th level characters, and treasure is a lot plentiful. In a way its a bit disappointed because as a player in the game Ive tried to keep to the AL rules and this has effectively contanimated my AL character to become a non AL character.
I dont keep a log sheet anymore for this character. |
