For example, there could be an adventure where the players encounter an elven queen that gives them the opportunity to trade an uncommon or rarer, non-consumable magic item for elven chain or an elven cloak. Once the item was traded, the player would note that on the certificate and that certificate would no longer be tradable. Items traded for in this way would also not be tradable.
This would give players a chance to get more useful magic items that also have a good story surrounding their aquisition. And it would help solve the problem facing players that end up taking a magic item because no one else wants it, or because they are inexperienced and don't know better.

There are optional rules that let players source out a magic item by using downtime days. Also IMO the items that are handed out during expeditions are useful the last session I played DDEX1-8 I got an item extremely useful to my Rogue. I personally liked the old days where finding an item in a pile of treasure was hard to come by, |

5e is actually way better about magic item uniquness than 1st edition was. In 1st edition, items were a big part of how a character was defined. I can't recall any 1st edition campaign I played in that was not filled with all sorts of magic items, I have played in quite a few. My one of the 1st edition campaigns I ran, I had a guild of extra-dimensional merchants who traded magic items. The players loved trying to barter with these enigmatic beings, and one never knew what sorts of items that they might have for trade.

| #5faarisumanDec 28, 2014 21:17:05 | Is there any word on what direction they will take for the next Encounters season or when it will start? Our group is continuing with the HOTDC storyline at the moment. |
| #6KalaniDec 28, 2014 23:45:16 | The next season starts mid-March. According to Skerrit, we should expect to see the information for next season in the January update for the ALPG. |
| #7PauperDec 29, 2014 6:51:13 | I agree with the OP that being able to 'swap' a magic item as part of an adventure might be cool. That kind of thing seems like it would be better suited as a certed event at an Epic adventure at a convention (where it can be tightly controlled) rather than a general-purpose thing for all of Adventurers League (where it will almost certainly be abused/exploited).
In earlier editions, there were really only a handful of 'signature' magic items (Gauntlets of Ogre Power, +5 Holy Avenger, Staff of the Magi). The idea that magic items were a significant portion of your 'build' started mainly in Third Edition and came to a peak in Fourth. I really don't have a problem with the Fifth Edition idea that magic items are cool and special, and not at all required to be an effective character.

Here is the official Magic item FAQ. http://dndadventurersleague.org/magic-items-faq/ |
| #11Coredump00Jan 03, 2015 16:54:16 | One way to keep it from being abused, is that you trade down.
Ex: you can trade your Rare item for any uncommon item You can trade your Very Rare item for any Rare item (or two uncommon items)
You can trade an uncommon item for one of 5 listed uncommon items.
OTOH, there is some merit to having to 'work with' the magic available. For instance, my Sword and Shield fighter might end up switching to Greatsword if I get the HotDQ weapon. (Despite having Duelist fighing style, etc.) |
| #12NozareemFeb 08, 2015 17:26:06 | I was at Winter Fantasy, which was GREAT!!! but didn't see a lot of trading certs, but u did see personally some dickery over magic items at the end of the mid. Where a player would intentionally lie about what he had or lie to get a rare item at one of the mods me and a friend were playing at. It seemed there is only a one real two step process that I as a player insisted be taken by two players who were trying to dick me and 2 other players out of items. 1 the DM should ask who has certs and those who can show only one item. And second the rules should be stated that those players do a roll off only. This did prevail for me and friend who were dealing some players who were trying to lie to get items to trade at the trading poste at the show. |
| #13TheBreenFeb 08, 2015 18:54:08 | The DM (in my opinion) shouldn't be asking "who has certs," but rather saying, "let me see your logsheets." Magic items whether they have certs or not should be disallowed if they don't appear on the logsheet, and this includes trading. If your logsheet doesn't show that you earned that item in a scenario that includes it*, I'm not going to let you use it in any capacity, including trading—you don't own it.
People in large numbers always include jerks, but responsible people in positions to curtail that behavior should.
*Longtime readers will remember I made a handy-dandy list of all the loot in every AL-legal adventure. |

| #18OraibiFeb 09, 2015 13:06:05 | But there are already lists out there of which items are in which adventures. |

| #20KroadFeb 09, 2015 17:14:10 | I checked out the trading post at winter fantasy and the offer was basically to trade a cert 1 for 1 for any of the following:
+1 Weapon of your choice with a d20 "flavor" roll from the dmg table, or
Bag of Holding, or
Ring of Warmth, or
10 shots of +1 ammo
and there might have been one other for trade.
in addition you could buy scrolls of any common (50 gold), uncommon (200 gold) or rare (1000 gold) spell. You could also buy a potion of greater healing for 1000 gold.
The weapons were the most popular, think they ran out of certs for that. You could also only do one trade per time slot (think it ran for 6 slots) so you can't buy 20 scrolls of cure light wounds or magic missile at once.
i could see how some might lie about their certs given the weapons available. I didn't have that problem in my games but the incentive is there. Don't see a way around it other than to have everyone declare what they are packing before the scenarios begin.

| #22BRJNFeb 10, 2015 18:56:26 | At one of my Winter Fantasy tables, another player with an Elven Cloak let me borrow it for the duration of the adventure. (My character was the designated Sneak.) Now I want one of my own; it works ! I'd like to see more generic Uncommon DMG items - NOT just weapons / armor / combat gear - get into AL circulation. |

| #25BRJNFeb 13, 2015 18:49:36 | I would like to see a change in the AL item-trading rules so that an item can keep changing hands (not limited to twice); but once you give away Item X, you can never take it back.
