Are DCI Numbers Needed For Home/Online Play?

I am running a public game using the D&D Starter Set adventure Lost Mine of Phandalin next thursday and i was wondering if a DCI number is needed for home/online play to participate in D&D Adventurer's League Organized Play program?

Here's a rapid answer to my question from AL admins over on twitter. Are they under a Haste spell?

You can ask the organizer of Organized Play events, and they'll give you a brief form to fill out an an official card. Easy peasy.

Home play doesn't get reported. It still has to be recorded on a log sheet to be legal to take it to a public play event. The log sheet requires a DCI #. Reporting is for public play events, but as far as I know you still have to keep the log.

You can get a DCI card at ANY WPN store. Just go in and ask for one. Then make sure you create an account on the DCI website associated to yoru number.

In order for home play to count, do ALL players/DM at the table need DCI numbers? For example, I have a pre-existing DCI#, but the area I moved to has no local WPN stores and the local players have no DCI numbers. If we play the starter set for instance, would I still be able to take my character to conventions/other AL?

1. As far as I know no stores in my area organise D&D AL or similar, but there are some organising MtG play. Could I go to any of those to ask for a DCI number if I want one?

 

2. I will probably learn to DM using published adventures legal for AL play while playing online and really like the flavor of the factions. Can my games either count as organised play so I get access to the factions, or can I get in on the faction fun without actually participating in AL (possibly even modify it for a homebrew campaing setting)?

1. The DDAL hasn't started just yet, but use any store that runs Magic would certainly be able to help get you a DCI number.

 

2. The DDAL is for public play (conventions, stores, libraries, etc...). You certainly can use the factions in your own home play. We will be putting that information online. Also they already made an appearance in the Start Set adventure.
