So I went to my first Con. From what I can tell, it was a decent size Con, probably ran over 75 slots of Expeditions.... maybe close to 100... but I'm really not too sure.
Got to play in 5 games ranging from the most RPG fun I have had in at least a decade or so, to the worst DM I have ever experienced.
But my big take-away is that all of the hand-wringing we do here about exactly what rule is allowed, or the exact right way to interpret some rule.... is really just peeing into the wind; or at best a tempest in a teapot. There is so much table/DM variance about how to run a game, and what the rules state; what precisely to allow in AL play just doesn't have that much of an impact.
I could go into the long list of rule/AL errors, or the huge variance in DM styles... but you can probably imagine them just as well. OTOH, the *goal* was for 5-7 people to have a good time, and for the most part that was achieved, in spite of, or sometimes because of, any 'errors' made.
What con were you at?
I was at TotalCon in Mass this past weekend, and I had a great time. There were some points where there was some confusion over a rule, but not with any tedium, and I played with maybe 7-8 different DMs.
Personally, I was surprised at the almost complete lack of arcane characters...I saw one sorcerer, one bard, one warlock, and no wizards over the course of 4 days.
DunDraCon in San Ramon, CA over the [US] President's Day holiday weekend was my first convention in about 15 years. I had a great time after an initial problem on Friday night.
I don't think I played at a table where there wasn't a bard (I played a ranger this time). There were a couple of wizards and some "spellcasters" where I never figured out their exact class. A fair amount of variety, I'd say.
I did play with one or two players over the weekend that I wished I could have given this award to. I suspect we've all encountered people like this, though. Here's the award.

I was at Dreamation in NJ. Apparently my estimate was off, and they had more like 60 AL tables.
Only came across one annoying player; he just wanted us to all be impressed with how 'edgy' he was by playing a Drow... and must have mentioned/reminded the table over half a dozen times that his Darkvision was 120'.... But he was pretty easily ignored.
Mostly I was just struck by how folks were just there to play and have fun, and not be quite so concerned about the precise wording of the rules/PG.
