Has anybody here used this feature in AL? How have you worked it, do you give your players extra secrets about each mod, or just advance knowledge of a major plot point? I'm planning a demon slayer for season 3, I want to use the discovery feature as his reason for fighting against the main BBEG. He's going to be a warlock(probably), I want the source of his powers and knowledge to be from a demon who opposes the BBEG, if one exists(preferably one that I won't be forced to fight). Will I have access to this information?

Discovery is one of the background features that's really hard to make work in organized play; I've never seen anybody try to make use of the feature at an AL table, and it wouldn't really be appropriate for gaining specific knowledge about a given module -- my understanding is that it's supposed to be something larger in scope, and more campaign-driven.

Short of purchasing the adventure upon release and reading it, I'm not sure how you would find out about the presence (or absence) of the kind of demon patron you're looking for; looking at the first two seasons, I'd suggest that the best chance you have of making that relevant would be in the published adventure, as opposed to the Expeditions.

Mike Mearl explained that those feature was intended to be used as adventure hook.

So your warlock patron, warn him

The thing is I doubt that Gromph or his portal will feature in season 3, maybe if you play the RoD adventure, but the expedition will likely deal only with the fallout reaching the Moonsea, thousands of miles removed from the original cause

If we get an expeditions BBEG, like this pestilences dude from season 1, it will likely not be revealed in advance and DMs have to find out just as the players module after module

But I think the main hub of activity is still around Menzoberranzan and the underdard around Hillsfar is as far away from that as the surface world around Hillsfar. With so many miles between Subrin Valley and the Moonsea, it hardly matters whether you're at the surface of a couple of miles below

The Moonsea region/Underdark near Hillsfar has its own drow and demons to worry about. So no, the Expeditions won't be in the Sword Coast (where the published adventures are usually set).

Since season 1 and season 2 both used DM uber-NPCs, I can't wait to see what nonsense season 3 has...Considering the cameo of Demogorgon on the cover...Ohh...I figured it out already....it'll be something that belongs to Orcus...and there will probably be a overly strong Shapechanged Devil pulling the strings somehow.

called it first!
