I was just looking at the 'Catching up' option in the AL Players Guide. As far as I can see : a player must be level 4, have 20 downtime days and enough gold to pay his/her lifestyle expenses for those 20 downtime days to get the charakter to level 5. Are there any other restrictions on when and how to use this option ? (say ;  no one in the party you're playing with is higher than level 4 at that moment). And if you use it ; how do you record this on the log sheet ?

There are no other restrictions. You just enter the expediture on your logsheet at the end of the adventure after which you wish to do the catching up.

YMMR with your DM though, since the Rules As Intended to kind of hint it's meant for.. Well.. Catching Up. Otherwise, any level 4 character would just skip to level 5 at no penalty in every Adventurer League group. Check with your local DM first!

The thing to keep in mind is that once you jump to Level 5 / Tier 2, you can no longer play that character in Tier 1 adventures.

As a general rule of thumb, HotDQ assumes that each episode = 1 level (based on the milestone rules the AP mentions). By extension, Episodes 1-4 comprise all of Tier 1. Tier 2 characters (5th level and above) are valid for play in episodes 5-7.

There is some wiggle room here. If a character reaches L5 during episode 4, I would allow them to finish the episode. I would not however, allow a L5 character who has not played through the first 3 episodes join EP4 (this would be as simple as checking the characters logsheet). A L5 character would be prohibited from joining Ep1-3 however. I would ask the player to make a new 1st level character, or provide them with a premade for the session.

Optimizer player will almost NEVER use that rule, since a lot of them would even want to receive half XP fromt eh adventure, this way they could run all the Expedition, LMOP and HotDQ, and have a chance to get more magical item, more gold, more renown, more downtime.

Player who abuse this feature will be penalyse by not being allowed to play Tier 1 adventure. the Tier 2 expeditions are not release yet, LMOP is tier 1 and bring you at 5th level. HotDQ is technically tier1-2 adventure bringing you to lvl 8. SO if you go from level 4 use the catch up mechanic to reach level 5 you wonT' be allowed to finish LMOP, nor any of the released expedition and will be allwoed to only do the last 3 chapter of HotDQ.

Yes all the magical item from HotDQ are in the last 3 chapters, but LMOP and the Expedition give you some pretty nice items for many class.

So go ahead let your player skip to level 5, then run expedition adventure and tell them: sorry this is only for character lvl 1-4, then laught maniacally lol
