| #1greywaterfoxSep 04, 2014 11:31:18 | My game store isn't following some of the rules for encounters, most noticeably they had us roll stats instead of using point buy or the standard array.
Does this render my character illegal if I tried to use it at other events?
And I'm really uncertain about whether we can choose a faction or not. (apparently faction is an expeditions only thing? But the faction folders are for encounters...although my store didn't even hand out the factions folders, just a blue D20).
Is there anything I can or should do about any of this? It wouldn't be very fun to start out with another lv 1 character if I have to move, what if I can't find any games starting in that range? |
| #2SkerritSep 04, 2014 12:27:29 | Did they say you could not use point buy? If they didn't disallow that, just point buy your PC and its still legal for use elsewhere. The characters with rolled stats are not legal in any DnDAL game and wouldn't transfer. For example we found a number of those at Gen Con ("How did you buy two 20s for your stats?") and were forced to hand them pre-gens.
As for Factions, yes you should still choose one. Factions are a much larger part of Expeditions and Epics, but a character in Encounters still picks one.

In that case, if I remake my character at the end of the episode and use point buy or the standard array, will it then become legal for future play in other places, or do I need to create a new character entirely?

| #5SangronSep 04, 2014 15:43:07 | The DM at my store isn't using factions at all. I also asked for a DCI number at the first session and was told that I didn't need it. I've thought about trying to play at another store, but that will add 30 minites to my drive and I like all the people I've been playing with. I've come to terms with the fact I won't have a transferable character. |
| #6UndrhilSep 04, 2014 19:36:43 | Sangron: You *do* need a DCI number for Adventure League play. If your gaming store doesn't or won't give you a DCI card, you might be able to contact Wizards of the Coast in order to get a DCI number for you. Heck. I have some spares downstairs. If you want, PM me and I can give you a DCI number right now. I obviously can't give you a card without getting an address and I don't feel comfortable asking for that, so ... not sure what to do about a physical card for you, in that case.
Skerrit, does AL require having a DCI card or just the number registered to you? |
| #7TiaNadiezjaSep 04, 2014 20:36:56 | Just the number. I haven't seen my card since Hurricane Katrina and I'm legal. |

This includes stats, so what I would do is before your next session rebuild from your rolled version to the point buy (27 points) using the table. Now as far as the Totally offbase lead gm knows you are following his Church of Scientology ways but in reality you are the only one there with a legal character. Make sure you get your log sheets filled out correctly too. (not his version of correctly).
There is no point trying to out talk him.. he has made up his mind. There is also a risk that if you start telling other people to do the same as you have done, one of them will go to him and inform. Which is a shame yes, but at the end of the day, you need to look out for yourself (and grab a Zhentarim folder!
