I'm DM'ing an in-store group through starter set adventure 'Lost Mine of Phandelver'. We had our first session before the PHB release, so everyone used pre-gens.
I understand that they can rebuild their PCs through 4th level but that, according to the D&D AdvLg Players Guide: 'the character does not GET new starting equipment'
Since all of my PCs are still 1st lvl, can they SUBSTITUTE starting equipment?
The reason this is an issue at all is we only had the 'classic four' class-types. Now people want to branch out to things like ranger, barbarian, etc and some will end up with very weird equipment, even possibly items they're not proficient with.
Thanks in advance for the clarification, MadZag

Since your characters should have treasure, there should be less of a problem buying the new equipment they'll need with their treasure, possibly selling back their old equipment if it is no longer useful.
