Hi all!

Sorry, I have a basic question, apologies if it's been asked before. I've been told I can 'respec' my D&D encounters character up to the 4th level. I want to change my 2nd level Cleric into a Druid. Would my druid be level 2 or start out at 1st level with no XPs?

Thank you,

Gerard Lee

Sure, but that passage could use a bit more specificity..

...using any other rules options available for that character's story origin.

You can change anything EXCEPT the name of your character.

Also, you can have as many characters as you want participating in Adventurer's League. (So, you could change your Level 2 Cleric into a Level 2 anything, and still make a new Level 1 Druid with 0 XP.)

That was always my impression, but I could not figure out what they meant by ".using any other rules options available for that character's story origin"   since they never clarified what the "characters story origin" was, and thus what rules options were available.

From what you are saying, that entire phrase is meaningless since they can use *all* rule options.... so 'story origin' is pretty meaningless. (Unless there may be origin restrictions in future AL products...)

Correct ... I suspect future story origins will have special rules. Here's the example I give to people to illustrate:

Right now, every character is being created in the Tyrrany of Dragons story origin. One "special" you can give your character is one of the special Backgrounds or Optional Features included in Appendix A of Encounters. (I have a PC with "Cult of the Dragon Infiltrator," another player has a lore-based PC who took "Dragon Scholar.")

Next March, a new story arc will be announced. Let's assume that it's all about Elementals and there is a similar appendix with some Features and a Genasi race option.

Now, you create a character. You choose whether it is a Tyrrany of Dragons origin character or an Elemental origin character. That choice defines the rules sources useable for that character. (So, for example, you could not choose to play a Genasi with the Dragon Scholar Feature.) Also, you cannot retrain your ToD Level 4 character into a Genasi. At PC creation, you choose the "story rule set" you want to use with that character, and that is your set of "universal choices" for that character, even if you retrain.

Side Note Commentary: I think this was a great design choice for fifth edition. One of the problems with earlier editions was that different splat-books were released and the number of things that could interact with each other grew exponentially. Players would stack things that were never intended to be stackable. For a hypothetical example, let's assume the developers thought it reasonable that a quick-acting PC should have access to a +4 initiative bonus. There's a feat for that in the Player's Handbook. Then the Eberron Campaign setting comes out which doesn't have that feat, but does provide a magic item that provides the +4 bonus. Then Dark Sun has a background that gives a +4 bonus. Another book decides to handle the initiative bonus by letting the PC roll two dice and choose. Then ... you have PCs with a +12 bonus roll twice because they cherry-picked from three different rules sets and break the initiative mechanic beyond what the designers intended. The idea of self-contained story-rules is awesome because developers and writers don't need to consider how X might interact with Y which does strange things when combined with Z. A system that focuses on providing bonuses exclusively through feats doesn't need to worry about overlapping with a system that provides the same bonuses exclusively through items.

Makes sense to me, thanks for the info.
