| #1wmharveyAug 11, 2014 5:33:42 | Hey guys. I really enjoyed my cleric of Kelemvor way back in Living City. I had thought about remaking him for the AL, but it seems that the death domain isn't allowed for players. I don't see the life domain being particularly fitting for this character. Any advice or should I just head back to the character concept phase and start over? |
| #2Plaguescarred1Aug 11, 2014 5:56:41 | I'd use the Life domain but reflavor it to be more related to life-death-life cycle POV, which could fit Kelemvor a little more. |

| #4GreenKnightAug 12, 2014 17:44:08 | Can you pick and choose Domains with gods in this campaign, or are you forced to take the one listed in the PHB? |

|
| #6VeleriaAug 15, 2014 13:54:01 | What about the life domain does not fit with Kelemvor? It seems appropriate to his lore. The spells help you perform the duties of his clerics. Also I don't even see a death domain in the PHB so that should be easy. |
| #7Neptune0923Aug 15, 2014 20:18:20 | The PHP I got at GenCon specifically says that Kelemvor's domain is death. The ALPG disallows death domain "unless that rules option is available for your storyline season". The party my PC played in encountered a cleric of Kelemvor in the game here. I don't know if the DM just ad-lib'ed or if it was in the module. I'll ask the power's that be tomorrow when I'm playing. |

| #9Neptune0923Aug 16, 2014 20:41:45 | The cleric we encountered was, indeed an NPC. I verified with Robert Adducci who runs the Adventurer's League. You're 100% correct. You cannot take the death domain but the cleric can worship Kelemvor with the Life Domain. |
| #10SkerritAug 18, 2014 14:30:53 | I will also note that a special reward was giving out at Gen Con (often to a few hard working volunteers, young children, or those we witnessed dying heroic deaths). This certificate that is not tradable (but is giftable) allows the owner to play a cleric of Kelemvor (only, no other dieties) with the Death domain from the DMG. The cert gives them the rules they need to do so in its text. |
| #11wmharveyAug 19, 2014 13:20:08 | Well that stinks. I couldn't afford to go to Gencon. Guess I'll have to move on to a different character |
| #12Neptune0923Aug 19, 2014 14:08:49 | Or play with the life domain.... |
| #13MirtekAug 19, 2014 15:24:05 | Or search ebay. Sometimes you can get these rewards there |
| #14KephraAug 19, 2014 18:49:53 | Or wait for the DMG. That's where the rules for that domain are, and once it's out, it may be a DM option to allow it (certainly, my cert says once the DMG is out, its rules supercede the ones on the certificate, likely just in case they change the domain around prior to release).
They'll likely also be awarding the certs for the AL at other conventions (and there are still a couple left before the end of the year they'll be at).
And from what I've seen, you are not REQUIRED to use the deity/domain association from the PHB (that's just the most common location for the domain, as I understand it). For sure, my cleric was neutral good, and when i was awarded my cert the cleric was permitted to immediately move from Lathandar to Kelemvor (in play, due to downtime activity and what had happened previously that got the cert to me).

| #16VeleriaAug 21, 2014 13:17:42 | What about the death domain makes you want it? The life domain fits the ethos of Kelemvor very well. |

|
| #18VeleriaAug 22, 2014 2:00:00 | I was asking the OP who is aware of the life domain however. |
| #19ChimpadinAug 24, 2014 3:12:55 | I have a strong feeling that Death domain will appear somewhere down the line with 5e. Just give it time. |
| #20Blade2718Aug 24, 2014 7:15:05 | I hope there will be other opportunities to earn this certificate. |
| #21SkerritAug 24, 2014 10:51:59 | There are more copies of it at a number of large conventions this fall (though not all of them). I think we may also have handed a few to some volunteers as well. |
| #22SpykesAug 24, 2014 21:03:56 | There are two in my group that received certs for Cleric of Khelemvore. One for outstanding volunteer work during the Corruption event and one for being an outstanding DM. They were told that there were less than 10 handed out, so they are a pretty rare item. Doubtfull it will end up on ebay anytime soon. |
| #23PauperAug 25, 2014 8:58:12 | Even though I only go to one major convention per year (GenCon), I have to say that the idea of limited, con-specific rewards with a significant impact on play seems very cool to me.
Here's hoping it continues through the obvious coming firestorm.
-- Pauper |
| #24SkerritAug 25, 2014 9:30:09 | It will likely continue, and we plan generally to use them as rewards for outstanding volunteers (I expect this is how you will normally see them) or to commemorate particularly outstanding events (such as permenantly sacrificing your PC during a BI so the rest of your sourounding tables could escape). They will generally be rare. |
| #25AlHazredAug 25, 2014 11:50:50 | My only concern is the possibility of seeing certs I've never seen before at a Con; how do I know they're legitimate or not? But I suppose, if someone's so desperate that they need to counterfeit certs for a role-playing game in order to feel cool, they've got other problems so I'll just let it slide so as not to impact other people's fun. |
| #26AtheosisAug 27, 2014 11:12:33 | AL sounds really, really lame to me. |
| #27IxidorRSAug 27, 2014 12:19:09 | Perhaps during the next story, the origin will allow for it. |
| #28VeleriaAug 28, 2014 19:16:15 | It seems a bit odd that the only religion in the city requires certs to function as a normal member, was this a campaign consideration or a matter of how the phb omitted it? |
| #29TiaNadiezjaAug 28, 2014 20:50:04 | Kel was a fighter in the Avatar novels; shouldn't he offer War?
Not that I can imagine reading those books and wanting to worship him. Whine, whine, whine, my curse, my curse, my curse, for three full books... bleh.
Almost as bad as Cyric. |

| #32SkerritAug 29, 2014 7:11:54 | There are plenty of religions in Phlan, but Kelemvor is the only major temple. There are also shrine to Auril and Umberlee. There is a temple to Bane that is in ruins and has a lay (non-cleric) priest of some upstart/dead god called Lathander who is squatting in it trying to turn it into some sort of clinic/homeless shelter. However, the worship of Bane is still popular among some members of the Black Fist. |
| #33TheBreenAug 29, 2014 9:42:45 | ::sputtering:: What? "Some upstart/dead god called Lathander?" Why you… ;o)

| #35SkerritAug 29, 2014 13:43:16 | Don't worry the Black Fist, formerly the militant arm of the Church of Bane, but now the city guard, has sworn to keep you safe and the laws enforced... You will be happy and safe... or else. |
| #36TyranthraxusAug 31, 2014 18:23:51 | Shivafang: Moonsea.
Look at the Cities
Zhentil Keep: HQ of the Zhentarim. Past location of people such as Senemmon , Manshoon, Fzoul and co.
Hillsfar: Ex racist hellhole where Demihumans were thrown into an Arena to keep the masses happy /satiated
Mulmaster: Powercity ruled by the First Blade essentially with an iron fist. Used to have a Beholder Corps filled up of .. Beholders. Also Largest Cathedral of Bane in Faerun.
Phlan did have a Temple to Tyr at one point. Im guessing with Tyr dying the temple was torn down or turned into a Lawyers office ?
None of these I would consider nice places and the Moonsea is generally such a misted over dank area that people in there are generally untrusting and suspicous of strangers.
Also Kelemvor isnt 'evil' From memory hes actually LN. He took the opposite stance of his predecessor Myrkul who was very much into the creation of undead (ie the whole Lich issue). Kelemvor spent the early years of his new reign instructing his clerics to hunt down undead and esp the powerful undead of his predeccesor. Hes more of your typical God of the Dead now in that he dosnt want to see people who have died turn into foul spawn. |
| #37TyranthraxusAug 31, 2014 18:22:15 | Also keep Umberlee happy with Sacrifices and tribute and she will treat you right |

| #39AlHazredSep 03, 2014 7:41:23 | I got a chance to see the cert (from long distance) at Dragon*Con this past weekend, where one was awarded to the only unrecoverable casualty at the champions table for the Corruption in Kryptgarden event. I can confirm that the cert is not tradeable. That means there is no essentially no chance it will end up on eBay. |
| #40AlphastreamSep 03, 2014 16:08:59 | We had a few players earn it at the Champions' Table at PAX as well. |
| #41TyranthraxusSep 03, 2014 18:55:45 | Which is good. I dont want to see any certs end up on Ebay |
| #42OraibiSep 06, 2014 1:43:51 | I kinda dislike the idea of organized play with two tiers of players: the elites who go to the right cons and thus get a shot at the special stuff (certs, special adventures, etc), and the common slobs who play in game stores or the wrong cons. This just feels like the opposite of how you want to bring new players into D&D. (It's different from getting a fancy pet or mount because you went to Blizzcon, because those are cosmetic and don't affect game play. Things that affect character choice or content access are a different story.) Or am I misunderstanding AL and it's really just for those who can spend a fortune to go to PAX or GenCon or whatever? |

| #44SkerritSep 07, 2014 9:43:43 | There are rewards for Encounters. You can get the faction folders as well as the certificates within. These sorts of benefits are generally only available to stores. I admit that there is an exception this year in that the faction folders were also available for the roll out at Gen Con, but the other similar things that are put into the store kits are not something you will get elsewhere. |

| (Reply to #45)Alphastream | I think a number of things over the years have shown that Wizards values every player. But, they do also try to provide incentives to different avenues of play. Those incentives vary over time. There have been years where the rewards in stores for Encounters were vastly superior to anything provided at conventions (and, predictably, convention attendees would complain) and years where home play received the best rewards (and those attending stores or conventions for casual play complained). For the current goals, it makes sense to try to help grow convention play, which has been a bit stagnant. It also makes sense to grow stores, which is why you see the cool Faction packs. It won't shock me to see additional adjustments over time. |
