I would assume we are many months, perhaps a year, away from being concerned about this.

WotC proper needs to figure out changes, playtest them, perhaps make them public for more playtesting, then make the 'official'.  No idea if they will make them official changes, or official variants, or just intoduce a new subclass in a future publication.

Depending on *how* they present the new rules, will likely dictate how AL will address them, but even then, it may mean waiting until the next season to implement any changes.  It will greatly depend on what changes (if any) are made, and how they are presented.

If I read the bullet points correctly, the implication is that any changes to the ranger would be incorporated into later setting books/adventures/storyline seasons. In AL, that means characters created in that storyline season would be able to utllize those changes, but other storyline season rangers would not.

The designers are saying they don't want to change (i.e.: issue errata for) the Player's Handbook, and the ranger isn't a class in the Basic Rules, so a specific storyline season ranger would seem to be the only other option. AL already has a mechanism in place to deal with that.

It depends on how/if/when they release the new build choice. If its in a new book only, then yes, you need access to it via a story origin unless we add it to the old origins (and that depends on what kind of book its in). That's always been the way new rules to the campaign work. Of course if they add it to the free Basic rules, you already have access to those, so you would be fine. You're really jumping the gun since I wouldn't expect to see this for 0.5-2 years. There is a good chance your ranger will have leveled out of the campaign before any new material is written, playtested and inserted into the game, if it ever happens. They haven't even said they are are going to do it, only gave it as an example of something that might come out of the data mining from the surveys.

Deleted my comment because Skerrit's was better.

That is theoretically possible, but at present all adventures end within Tier 3. It is also theoretically possible that L20 characters may be excluded from some hypothetical tier 4 adventures.

I'm sorry to say there are too many hypotheticals in this request for a ruling that I can no longer guess what will happen if all of these things might happen two years from now. If we come to that bridge, we come up with a way to cross it. Not knowing the liklihood of any these hypothetical situations, I see no reason to argue about it.

Qwerty:  Short answer: No One Knows!

All we know is 'they' are 'looking at it'.   They may or may not make changes, they may or may not create errata, they may or may not create a new subslass, they may or may not change the online rules, they may or may not create a FAQ that 'redesigns' the PHB classes.....

*IF* they do any of these... they may or may not do them in the next 2 months, or 2 years....

Since no one can possibly know what types of changes they will make, nor how they will present the changes... there is absolutely no way to know how it will effect AL play.

Plus we do not yet even know if there will ever by AL adventures beyond lvl 15.... or if there will be possibilities beyond lvl 20.... or if your Season 1 character will still be 'legal' in season 4, or 8 , or whenever.

But it really doesn't matter.  Do you *like* your current Ranger PC?  Then keep playing him.  If you like him, you like him,... future changes should not change that at all....

One thing of note;

It isn't as though there are going to be rule changes that will make your character less effective. There may be new rules that come along that allow you to make a new ranger who can ultimately be more effective than your current character but that's always the case. This isn't really any different than if a new book were released with a new race or background.

Uh, oh....

This is what happened to ranger in third edition...

Looks like we're headed into a 5.5 rule set fellas...

Once they start "looking" into one class....its a slippery slope and all of a sudden....everything's changed once again

Forget about sub optimal ranger options...

The big takeaway is that they DO NOT CARE about the massively broken rules in the CORE BOOKS.

The game isn't new anymore....They have had months to read forums, read the books themselves, playtest stuff, and just use a little common sense.  Their solution to a bunch of obvious problems appears to be 'Maybe a new book will have some new options that your character won't be able to use anyways.'.

Did they completely forget that people actually get attached to their characters when they spend a few hundred hours developing them?  Making the game actually WORK and be fun should not be a splat book....It should be a mission statement.  The statement they are making is "We already got your money, **** off."

I am  shocked and dismayed to find out that I have somehow managed to run, play and have fun with a game that neither WORKS nor is fun. Luckily a lot of that is compensated by the blissful realisation that hyperbole is the ABSOLUTELY, most awe inspiring, universe shattering, GREATEST achievement of humanity EVER!!!

Its not like a game has to be bug free. But if you are a business that cares about your customers satisfaction, you have a responsibility to follow up.

There is a really simple fix for obviously broken rules.  It is called eratta.  You dont even have to reprint your book, you just post the eratta online like you did for the last several years.

For example, simulacrum.

Find steed

contagion

trap the soul

the concentration mechanic in general.

many class features

I'm not sure what any of those spells have to do with Adventurers League play and the volunteers that run it (and who have no power over what is in books or published as eratta.

Is AL not owned by wotc?

I was under the impression that wotc owns AL and that encounters was a way to spread the brand and make it easy for people to learn the game?

I know a lot of volunteering is involved. But if wotc doesn't own it and there is no OGL then how could anyone play it and use wotc material?

If someone is making the rules of the game and not taking into account feedback from the people organizing the whole thing, then that feels like a major design flaw.

They want people to participate in a huge advertising campaign where we pay lots of money and follow a bunch of rules and keep track of logs and dci numbers and drag in other people to do the same.   But they can't be bothered to iron out some of the bugs?

Or am i just misinformed?

Yes AL is 'owned' by WotC, but they are not at all responsible nor empowered to create errata.  You are basically calling up your local store and complaining about a corporate decision.

Something does not have to be game breaking to be broken.

Warlock listing that it has a wizard spell is broken.

Spells mentioned that dont exist is broken.

NPCs having abilities with the exact same name as PCs abilities but that function different. (Eg potent cantrip).

If find steed isnt broken in your game then u are lucky.  RAW the horse throws cones of cold and double stacks a lot of abusive spells.

Simulacrum RAW is an infinite combo that lets you cast infinite wishes for free.

Yeah right now most people are level 5-6, but if they play through RoT they will have 10th level characters. Then when the next tier 2 expeditions come out, you  get to have 10th level guys stomping your level 5 modules and making the actual new players feel useless.

I get that the AL forum guys arent in charge of eratta. But do they seriously not have an e-mail for the guy that is?  Is there no communication where the eratta guy cant be bothered to at least peruse the 110 page Stickied Ask a Question thread?  If 20 people start complaint threads about something, you can assume a lot more that dont see forums have the exact problem, but instead go home frustrated and might not buy your stuff anymore.

Before, as it should, the debate relocates elsewhere, I gotta say. if I ever get someone at my table that is about to claim a double cone of cold or lightning bolt with the aid of their found steed I promise to maintain a high level of professionalism as an AL DM and not laugh in their face before, in the kindest and non confrontational way possible, trying to say no (yes, trying, its not worth ruining a table over..).

I am making absolutely zero promises about not sharing the story at the bar later that day or at an NPA just to get all the held back laughter out though...

Well I don't really play rangers but the Warlock blade pact needs a invocation that allows the player to be able to use his Cha for attacks and damage.  This way your not just getting stuck only usin finess weapons. Other wise you overextend modifiers with Dex, Cha, and Str just so he/she can utilize other weapons that your able to use.  Plus it would be nice if Warlocks could get 6 spell slots to use not just 4 by level 20!
