Hey all, I would like to get a ruling on a situation that arose this evening. At the start of an adventure we were playing, the party was presented with a permanent magic item, which one player called dibs on before it even hit the table for party discussion...no big whoop, we let it go and carried on, as he was one of the only two people sitting at the table who could use it. At the end of the game, when the party was dividing the gold given to us for completing the adventure, he insisted it should be split 6 ways, with him getting a share. I pointed out, that he recieved a certed magic item, and that should be considered his part of the share. How should this have been handled?

As per the end of the adventures, and the DnDAL PG, treasure is intended to be equally divided by the number of PCs (unless its not possible or the players agree).

That seems fine to me. The default is to divide up the coin equally, but you are certainly allowed to make deals, such as we'll give you the item and not roll off, if you give your share of coin back to the others.

Kentar: To be honest, it wouldnt need to be an AL game for the whole grudge thing. It can happen in any game.

Oh no, I couldn't care less, nor could the rest of the guys. The player/ alt DM who feels he was jipped is the one holding the grudge.

Consistency is important ...

Generally, we split all of the money equally at the table, then roll-off for magic items (including consumables).

am I wrong or did I read somewhere that magical item had no gold value, so they are worth 0gp (cannot be sold, cannot be bought) The idea for "fair share" is now that he got a magical item, next magical item the group receive he cannot call "dibs" on it and will be allowed to take it ONLY if no one else want it and everyone agree he can have it.

So sharing the gold equally in 6 parts, and next magical item he won't be allow to ask for it, unless the party agree to give it to him.

I've encountered this problem in my 30 years of gaming and the best way to deal with it has been the following way all party members get their share of treasure and if a magic item is discovered it should go to the player that it is most suited towards, someone calling dibs on an item before it has entered game play might not be ready as previously stated.  If the magic item WAS worth any gp that should be deducted from their share now take into account that this is my groups house rule so it may not apply to your group.

Whenever there is a magic item, one of the following occurs:

  • The party collectively agrees that player X gains the item (regardless of how many items they already possess).
  • The item is contested.

If the item is contested, the following occurs in order:

  • Compare the number of permanent magic items on their adventure log from all players contesting the item. The player with the lowest number of magic items gets the item.
  • If there is a tie for the lowest number of magic items, those players choose which of them has the item, either randomly (via roll-off), or through some other means.

Players may offer compensation (such as their share of treasure rewards) in an effort to convince the party (or other contesting players) to conceed the item to them - but this is not mandatory.

In any case, the character who gains the item marks the item on their adventure log, weakening their position in further item contests.

Sorry to ask this but if you have a player/DM who hold grudges because he has slighted shouldn't you maybe have a sit down with him and explain this or worst case scenario leave him out of the group.  In the years I've been gaming I've encountered this problem with "newer" players and usually a simple out of game sit down has resolved this situation and if it was something that continues to persist you simply remove the player from the game which ends the problem.  But again I am a grumpy old man who waves his fist at the kids and screams "Get off my lawn".

In all seriousness I would have a sit down with this player and explain that the game is not personal if an item is better suited for someone else they are the ones who should get it.
