It may be a long time before this character get to play, and even though they might be 10th level, theyll still be running around in those old shoddy starting armor.
Seems a portion of what is awarded to the characters to offset living expenses might be in order. |

They run there group trought a dungeon and receive XP and a bag of holding (or whatever RP item you choose from the GM item rewards) while they are running the encounter they take note of the adventure with interesting loot, then ask one of there friend to run them trought those interesting dungeon, so we end up with a DM caracter geared with all (even the most secretive magical item) from the adventure.
For example, the DM know the secret passage from where the end guy will try to run away, so he could find that secret passage and use it to surprise the bad guy and get his loot instead of letting the bad guy run away. and when the DM come to play he got all the usefull magical item that he could get from the adventure. |
| #3ZephemusAug 14, 2014 10:22:45 | 1.) DMs can't recieve gold or renown for an adventure they DMed, only the XP and Downtime Days. (I'm not sure, but I think that their character can still play the adventure to get the renown, magic items, or secret missions associated, so you can get double XP and Downtime as offering your services to DM essentially).
2.) Magic item distribution has a system that gives priority of choice usually to the player with the least amount of magic items in the group. Read the Adventurer's League Player's Guide, magic item distribution is covered on page 10, notably the green box at the top of the page. This is why the DM's reward actully allows them to choose three options that aren't magic items, them gaining a magic item from that would mean that are that less likely to claim a magic item that drops later if they are the only one that has one already.
3.) Magic items are rare (The entirety of Hoard of the Drago Queen only has three perms I believe), so not every adventure that would come out is promising magic items. Consumable magic items (Like the Scale of Bahamut) are more common, but they're one offs and check the certificate again, you shouldn't even be able to use that item until November and it expires in Feburary. |
| #4trigicianAug 15, 2014 21:54:48 | DMs only get 300 xp per episode and 10 downtime days. I just ran the Lost Mine of Phandelver for a group, which has four parts that are treated as episodes. In those four episodes, the PCs got about two magic items each, more than 5,000xp, and about 1,000 xp. They each got 4 renown (1 per episode) and 40 downtime days (10 per episode). Final score:
DM: 1,200 xp, 40 downtime, 0 gold, 0 magic items PC: 5,370 xp, 40 downtime, about 1,000gp, 2 magic items
There is no need to worry about judges running around and getting too much stuff. When a judge occasionally gets a magic item, it will be well-earned. We're subject to the restrictions on magic item distribution ourselves. If I were to play at the upcoming convention with the group I just ran, I would probably have first pick of magic items, since I have none and they have 1 or 2 each (they rejected many of them, not wanting to fill on stuff they didn't really want in case it meant they would have to miss out on something better later). However, once my PC gets an item, I would fall to the back of the line on item choice. I really don't think it will be a problem.
However, what really did seem to be a problem was the question of whether a PC must take an item. The group I ran got several items that everyone agreed were great and several that everyone agreed were good. They had a little difficulty deciding who got the great items. Once those were divided, they decided not to take any of the other items, fearing they would find better ones later, in other adventures, and not be able to take them because their magic items numbers were too high. Can they do that? Is that permitted in Adventurer's League play? Essentially, they are keeping the number of items they have artificially low so that when a better item comes up, they are positioned to be able to get it. The party literally left magic items lying in the road. Do they have to take all of the items found in an adventure, or are they allowed to leave some behind?

How we handle if a player want only 1/4 of xp? can we give that option? they want to feel they earned it. even if they take last pic on magic items? Can players give a magic item of players chooise to the dm?

| #13Suzume_StjohnAug 25, 2014 12:34:53 | So... Trading is the only way for a DM PC to get a magic item? But you can only trade equal rarity items, and then only if you have a certificate, right? How would a DM PC ever get the first item to trade if he's constantly behind the screen? |

| #16Jay_Ibero_911Aug 25, 2014 20:01:58 | Since the DM rewards for home play are based on episode tier, shouldn't there be some sort of official AL document what the tiers are considered to be for each episode of the home play adventures (starter set and Hoard)? Hoard seems to be 1-4 for episodes 1-5 and then 5-10 for episodes 6-8, but an official designation would be good to have. Official level bands for the episodes would also clarify how to handle characters moving from the starter set to hoard. |

| #21PromAug 30, 2014 8:24:13 | DM rewards seem fine from the Encounter kits. Home play rewards are less, but I still think it's a reasonable reward system. I have asked stores in my area to have a DM reward system for people who run games in store, to encourage more DM's, this is what I think is more important. Store discounts, store credit, dice, miniatures, dice bags, DnD tiles, maps, etc. Without DM's there is no AL programme. |
| #22TyranthraxusAug 31, 2014 18:02:23 | Keep in mind that if you are a AL Expeditions DM ONLY (ie you are not running AL Encounters) then you get no DM folder and thus no items.
This is my boat effectively.
EDIT: Gold would be nice, but to be honest characters wont be coming away with masses of gold from every expeditions scenario and gold dosnt seem to do as much in 5e as say 3.5 or earlier editions so Im not too concerned.
The fact that my DM character is safe and slowly accruing ultimate POWAH is all the reward I need. |
| #23FeetzSep 06, 2014 6:54:14 | What if DMs received 1gp per downtime day rewarded. That would cover a modest lifestyle. Otherwise DMs will accrue downtime days they can't use. |
