DnD 5e Online Organized Play Recruitment

So for the past year or so I've been DMing Pathfinder Society games on Roll20, and there is a thriving community on a Google Group called the Pathfinder Society Online Collective: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/pathfinder-society-online-collective  They've got almost 2,000 members and as a DM it's been easy to find players for game, basically whenever I want.  For player's, I thinks a great option to find a game if you don't have a FLGS (local gaming shop) within easy reach. Almost 90% of the games I've seen advertised looking for players are on roll20, a smaller number are for MapTools, FantasyGround or others.

So I'd like to start a new community for folks that are looking to organize or participate in new Organized Play program and to quickly find games online to play online.  If you’re interested in joining, please sign up here: DnD Adventurer's League Online Collective

Right now, anyone can sign up, but after we reach 100 or so members, signups with have to be verified by a moderator before you can post.  If any account starts to spam, with commercially related links or material unsuitable for a decent human being, (or a bot is detected), that account will be banned.  Many users allow PFS Online Collective posts to go directly to their email in order to not miss a game that may fill up quickly, but there are also options to get a summary once a day of all posts, or not have it forwarded to your email at all and just check the website.  Do whatever works for you.

As we grow, we’ll also be interesting in recruiting more members who want to become a collective moderator, there will be a post going up if you are interested in taking on a bigger role in helping build a bigger, healthier DnD Online Organized Play community.

Again, thanks for Pathfinder Society Online Collective, whom we ripped off, pretty much wholesale.  They have a great community for Pathfinder Society, and I think there will be plenty of people who would love a similar community for DnD Adventurer’s League.

I signed up. Would be great to play on roll20 if I can find a good time to do so. Wed nights don't work for me at my FLGS.

Great news from both of you!  Plague, I've seen you advertising games here and I've heard you put on a great game.  I'll add RPGTable Online to the list of games, and hopefully, people will have accounts before they sign up for your games.  If the community grows, like it did on PFSOC (the Pathfinder version) I can usually find 5-6 players + alternatives in less than an hour.

DM_HEEGZ, I'm still trying to get my mind around how AL will actually play out.  If PF, people could only run a scenario once, and there were a bunch of scenarios. With AL, so far we'll have Starter Set and a long campaign, or what PF called Adventure Path, and I'm not sure how players will drop in and out of sessions.   HEEGZ, do you prefer to DM or play, and have your DMed on roll20?

This sounds like a great idea! I know that on the Fantasy Grounds forums and Yahoo Group they were talking about trying to start up online games for 5e. I haven't anything since the initial conversation though.

So, from my experience with PFS,  for the first few years Paizo also didn't really endorse or have policies that were condusive to online play and I really think that Pathfinder Society Online Collective helped push that along.

I think once they saw how many games were being played online, they had to rethink their strategy.  There's alot of players, those with disabilities, those that live in remote areas, deployed military folks, that all would like to participate and I think the online PFS community grew around a few sites and that one google group to the point they couldn't be discounted.  I think we can move WoTC that same direction, and that's what I'm trying to start with https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/dnd-adventurers-league-online-collective

From what I've read, non-public play is only supported with Lost Mine of Phandelver and the published version of Hoard of the Dragon Queen, so play opportunities will be limited.

Hold up. Here's where I'm confused. I'm interested in D&D Expeditions, but getting access to the adventures is limited. Limited, meaning you need to somehow get login/password information for adventure access by going to a physical WPN store.

http://dndadventurersleague.org/faq/are-dd-expeditions-available-for-home-play/

D&D Expeditions is a public play program. Private home play is not currently supported with D&D Expeditions. Players wanting to participate in D&D Adventurers League play at home should pick up the storyline adventure available in stores (for Tyranny of Dragons, the first adventure is Hoard of the Dragon Queen). All rewards earned in the adventure are official for the D&D Adventurers League.

We have been trying to figure out how to also get official support for Expeditions for online play. At this point it is wishful thinking, and it sounds like it might be supported later, but not yet.

I'm trying to get a public gaming group going locally, and I could reuse any Expeditions adventurers online/home if I wanted to later.

Just Signed Up!

Honestly, since I am an hour away from an FLGS my gaming groups have been through Roll20 almost exclusively (even when at home events.)

That said I have found that as long as you don't get caught up in worrying about making things perfect and use it as an aid to your DMing than it is easy to setup. Of course you can spend time to make the maps and tokens perfect but then normally you do that with the game even with home events. Its like anything and gets easier with practice. We use Roll20 and Skype to make things easier.

So lets hope Wizards of the Coast answers our call for the Online Adventurer's League side of things, even if we have to broadcast our ugly mugsthrough stream, otherwise guys like myself looking to get involved a little more into the community will be left out and that would be a shame. I know I have half a dozen former players from the old school AD&D days that have thought about getting back into the game and VTT can allow the old crews that want to return to the game they spent many a teenage summer playing a way to get back into it that is not just fun but becomes more than just a sandbox!

BTW heading to FanExpo 2014 in Toronto at the end of the month so as a shout out to any in The Collective doing the same and hope to see you there!
