My read is that this is not permitted under AL and if I do this with a character I should disregard such items when playing in a strict AL game.
What say ye?
thank... |
| #2OraibiJul 19, 2015 21:44:59 | That's great for a home game, but not at all allowable under Adventures League rules, I'm sorry to say.
It's not just "strict" AL games, it's any AL games, your character wouldn't be legal and any DMs looking it over would tell you that you can't use those items. |
| #3Coredump00Jul 20, 2015 1:16:07 | This just isn't allowed when playing AL. And really, either your character is playing only AL games, or it isnt' an AL character any more.
For example, you can't craft a magic sword and use it for 5 sessions, then go to a convention and just not use the sword. As soon as anyone is allowed to craft magic, or play with someone that is using crafted magic items.... you are no longer playing an AL game.

"I like to roll my stats."
...
No. Not in the League. |

| #7Napolean_WarlordJul 20, 2015 9:53:50 | Thanks guys. I guess I'll keep my unorganized play characters separate from AL. Or just have a separate set of non-magical equipment and stats. I've never gone to a convention so its probably hypothetical |

| #9Coredump00Jul 20, 2015 11:15:14 | Some people tend to be a bit hard core about this.... Make a good faith effort. Keep your character legal, and make sure the games are not getting out of hand and you should be fine.
EX. If you play in a game and you craft or use a crafted magic item.... not okay, don't do it. If you play in a game, and another PC has crafted a +1 sword.... not great, but keep yourself legal and you should be fine. If you play in a game, and PC1 has some crafted items, and PC2 has an item the DM made up for him, etc.... not okay, don't do it.
You might want to mention to the DM that the AL guidelines do not allow for crafting of any magic items (sans healing potions), and see if that has any effect. But the reality is, some DMs are not all that concerned with the AL rules, and will break them as they see fit. Not saying it is a good thing... |

If you don't want to derail a conversation, don't derail it. If you do want to derail a conversation, don't say that you don't. Pretty straight forward stuff here. |
| #15SeanersJul 27, 2015 16:10:27 | Coredump00, thank you for asking the question publicly. Otherwise, I might have been led astray. |
| #16MasterNamerJul 27, 2015 17:28:06 | RCs are an important part of the AL structure, but they have no more power to make rules than a player off the street. AL admins have the ability to make rules, and WOTC can make rules, but not RCs, LCs, or DMs. RCs, LCs, DMs, and players can contribute to conversations that lead to WOTC or the AL admins makes new rules, but the power to make rules is in the hands of WOTC and the admins. RCs and LCs are supposed to point people to the areas where answers can be found, not create rules on the spot. |
| #17Byakugan01Jul 28, 2015 5:40:51 | Yeah I gave my players some free pastries once, so my whole table isn't AL legal anymore. There is no way I can undo the free meal...the pastries were forever digested.
The worst part is that some of those characters played at different tables when I was away, and so now EVERY table in this state is no longer AL legal...some of them went to Gen Con as well, doing an untold amount of damage.
Their only hope is to add Borg Nano-probes to 5e which may be able to counteract the pastry virus. Unfortunately, it takes them 2-3 seasons to get a rules change through...as long as that rule does not involve players trying to exchange wingwear, obviously.
I might be a mean DM and use Suggestion on several party members telling them to pick up the wingwear and try it on and take a rest.....bwaahaha! |
| #18xad1975Aug 03, 2015 12:30:15 | Imagining you could legaly craft magic items, what would you do? Consumables aren't worth crafting.
Healing potions? They cost 4 downtime and 100 gp to craft. Pretty much the price they sell for. I guess whoever brewed them was extremely altruistic.
Scrolls? Lvl 1 spell scrolls cost 100 gp to craft and eat up 4 downtime days. Lvl 2 & 3 spells go for 500 gp and 20 downtime days. Lvl 4 & 5 spells go for 5,000 gp and 200 downtime days. Makes you wonder WHY spellcasters would create scrolls in the first place?
About 54 years and 500,000 gold, casting Wish on a daily basis to create a Wish Spell Scroll? You better use it for something really worthy. |
| #19KalaniAug 03, 2015 15:41:21 | As per AL rules - Healing pots cost 25gp, 10 downtime, and lifestyle expenses for 10 days. |

| #22KalaniAug 04, 2015 7:55:43 | My aristocrat cloak gets a huge discount as well
My point still stands that you have to pay lifestyle costs for 10 days. The fact that some of these are free (or covered under crafting rules) doesn't change this fact - your costs for those 10 days just happen to be 0 |

| #24KalaniAug 04, 2015 11:30:07 | You have to pay lifestyle expenses according to your lifestyle... Some backgrounds give lifestyle expenses for free, and crafting gives you a modest lifestyle for free as well. It doesn't change the fact that the lifestyle expenses still need to be covered (either by background, crafting, because you have a squalid lifestyle, or out of pocket). You are correct in that my comment could have been much more specific and mentioned every possible variable, but I was typing on my phone and was trying to keep my comment concise (and so I handwaived the specifics).
