If you didnt know, about 50 + minutes ago, Trapdoor Technologies announced that their partnership with WOTC to develop Dungeonscape had come to an end. Im not going to speculate on why its the case but rather note that this means that at least for the forseeable future that we are unlikely to get a character creator for Adventurers League.
Whether that be to make characters for Expeditions or Encounters play.
Its indeed a shame and there is obviously a reasoning there that we may never know but I hope to see some sort of character creator software in the future. I think Gaming circa 2014 needs it.

I built my own 5e/AL character generator as a database, but it was complex and would need a lot of work to account for the million variations possible as characters progress. To put something together as a finished product like Dungeonscape would be an incredible amount of work.
Good luck to all parties.

The 4E D&D Insider toolset was very good when it was good (the Character Builder and Compendium, in particular), but compared to the ambitions revealed at the start of the 4E era, the overall toolset was disappointing (the D&D Game Table worked, for instance, but it would take a pretty generous definition of 'useful' to bring it up to that level, at least for me and most folks I know who tried it).
You could probably point to a different point of failure for each editions digital toolset -- this one probably had at least a little to do with how to resolve who gets the money from sales of the iOS app and related in-app add-ons -- but there have been successful (though limited) third-party digital tools in each edition going back to v3.0. The common thread, both for WotC's lack of success and other groups' success, seems to be focus -- putting out good digital tools is likely a lot more work than it seems, and getting it right isn't easy.

It fully supports multiclassing, but it kind of does some weird stuff with caster levels when you MC into a 1/2 or 1/3 caster class, like Fighter.
It doesn't support all of the rules. It does character creation perfectly, and it gives you complete access to change values, etc. after the initial character creation. You have to have the PHB in order to use this, but it's fully functional otherwise. It works perfect on my Droid Incredible 4G, so I imagine it would look amazing on a tablet!
Check it out. The icon for it is a green d20 with the 14 showing and upside-down. I forget the name of the author. |
