The basic problem is that these adventures will have a smaller audience. The majority of PCs will be unable to take part in any given adventure. In theory, 6 adventures need to be written instead of just one. That's a lot of extra work. and likely not as attractive for conventions as well. They too will find it easier to run 1 generic adventure instead of managing 6 specials for the same number of players. so we have higher expense for fewer plays. That's a pretty good reason to skimp on these adventures. The PC may find it quite hard to find these secret missions. |

| #5DocSunAug 13, 2014 6:51:21 | So are there any faction mission in the Hoard of the Dragon Queen or Rise of Timat as I know that is a big deal that my players at the store want to focus on and I think that is unfair that they get left out or that we have to put their mission on hold just to do a faction mission/expidition that theoretaclly is near the moonsea reagion and not the sword coast?.... or their character is now level 5 due to continuing with Hoard of the Dragon Queen but is not elegible to participate in any of the expiditions due to surpassing the level cap of most of the early ones (levels 1-4) Or a way to use downtime days to complete a mission for them off the books so to speak? Even that would be a good step. |
| #6Setzer_GAug 13, 2014 5:58:45 | My initial thoughts are that there will be secret objectives per mod written in for some faction members. Unless we have a stated structure otherwise, this seems like a good way to do it. That was the way that some things ran in previous organized play. Could very well be that with 5 mods per year, we get a secret mission or objective written into the story that the other pc's don't know about.
EDIT: Ha! too late on my response then, looks like I was beaten to it. |
| #7TheBreenAug 13, 2014 23:35:55 | My take on this is that it will work something like in Lost Mine of Phandelver.
SPOILER ALERT!
In the town of Phandelver, there are a few NPCs that want to send the party on side missions of benefit to the NPC, but which do not necessarily advance the main story plot. As a reward for completing these missions, the NPC "privately approaches certain members of the group to urge them to join" the NPC's faction. This could easily be the mechanism used for secret missions.
Example: "Late that night, Violet Moonshadow approaches any member of the Harpers. 'I hear you're heading to Rockhaven tomorrow. The local Sheriff there has been getting pretty aggressive about tax collection, and has been buying an awful lot of weapons lately. See what you can find out about it and make sure things are peaceful.' "
Rockhaven is a place the party was going anyway, and checking up on the Sheriff is the secret mission. |
