Is there an official guide as to how much renown to award for various activities while running HotDQ for home play? Also, am I allowed to let characters join the Lord's Alliance or Zhentarim even though there isn't an explicit way to do so in the adventure?

Do they also get 10 days of downtime for each chapter?

I assume none of the content in HotDQ counts as a "secret mission" in regards to advancing to rank 3 or higher in faction?

If you don't want to play with the handicaps - don't play an AL game. You can always play Hoard of the Dragon Queen or Rise of Tiamat in your non-AL games just as easily. In addition, if you have access to the Expeditions modules, there is nothing stopping you from poaching them for your non-AL games as well.

AL games however, are designed to have a uniform play experience, and are also designed from the premise that the character is portable. The fact that this particular detail is meaningless to you is not relevant, as there are hundreds (if not thousands) of other players which will travel with their PCs. The rules are relevant to them.

Furthermore, its not just conventions. You could travel to a different store in your local area, or you could travel to a different city within your State/Province/Territory. You could also host home games, and/or join someone else's home game and have your character remain 100% legal (providing you accurately filled out your adventure log).

We simply do not have the right, nor the ability to cherry-pick what parts of the ALPG we wish to follow. We follow it as written, in its entirety. End of story.

Oh Im not saying that the ALPG is a holy text or anything. It can (and most definately should) be changed in order to reflect the actual gaming experience the fans, and admins want to see. I was simply saying that until such changes are made, we cannot cherry pick the parts we like, and leave the rest on the cutting room floor so to speak

There are things I don't like about it either - such as clear guidelines as to how to rule several ambiguous rules, or the fact that Rise of Tiamat is basically a skeleton plot and we, as AL DMs can't add/change plot elements - yet its an incomplete mission for our purposes.

The simple truth however, is that the ALPG will never cater to everyone's tastes or gaming preferences (that is impossible).

While the focus is to cater to as many players as possible (and changes to the ALPG should be made to accomodate such), there will always be some players which will not find the Organized Play experience enjoyable, nor to their taste. There are many other gaming experiences that such players would most likely prefer (LARP, homebrew, houseruled games, Roll20, etc). There are also some players who simply do not enjoy the 5E ruleset, and would prefer a different edition, or game.

There should be no judgement on either side of the fence, regardless of player preferences. I personally would encourage all players to "give it a try", but if they find the OP experience is not to their taste, I would strongly encourage they seek out something that is rather than continue to play something they do not enjoy.

Then let me put it this way: what is the cost to the campaign overall if we allow Nolwelen to break the "rules" of AL to address his unique situation? Does it directly and adversely affect anyone else in the campaign?

I kind of doubt it would. As such, doing a simple cost-benefit analysis, allowing modifications to the system in Home Play done in good faith (and subject to disallowance by other DM's should it appear abusive) seems to be of greatly more benefit than detriment.

One of the issues that I have had problem with in my 18 years of RPGA play is the growing trend to distrust players, creating hoops for everyone through which to jump in an ill-advised attempt to stamp out cheating. I believe OP in all its forms would regain some of the whimsy and appeal it commanded in the mid to late 90's if we simply placed more faith in the players and DM's to run a fair and fun game. If we use the ALPG as a framework or series of guidelines as opposed to unbreakable rules to be enforced, we decrease or eliminate the standoffish nature that has appeared in recent years, thereby increasing inclusivity.

To put it more simply, D&D should not be a members only club, and by extension neither should AL. If we need to bend a few rules in order to achieve that, so be it.

With the exception of "Tyranny in Phlan" secret missions have not been fully implemented yet. Skerrit has said we should see more on that front in Feb  with the last few expeditions for the season. It will however play a larger roll next season.

There is no *requirement* for a PC to be part of a faction. Any player that doesn't see merit, can simply opt out.

For those that choose to take part, there are currently limited tie-ins... and supposedly more tie-ins and options are coming.  But those are not mandatory either.

Please note that the Admins do not control the printed adventures and what goes in them (or to a lesser extent the Encounters program). We generally control the overall campaign (under the watch of WOTC) and specifically the Expeditions and Epics. The home play adventures that Nowelen is playing weren't even written by WOTC, but rather were contracted out (as is the same for Princes of the Apocolypse), and that boutique firm did not include a special mission in the adventure (likely because the rules for factions weren't even written when they were working on the adventure). The campaign is all of about six monthes old and since the admins were hired we have done what we could to make the campaign as inclusive as possible (and will continue those expansions). Please note that we were not hired all that much before the start of the campaign and so the first adventures and the PG were already in progress when we came on.

For your particular issue, one of the possibilities we are discussing is in fact a free, downloadable special mission adventure specifically for home play folks, but its not there yet, and I do not promise that it ever will be if we make a different choice. Please remember we are mostly volunteers with families and jobs (who all live in different cities) and we are putting out roughly 30 free adventures a year on top of other duties. So yes, we know its an issue, and we are attempting to find a solution. Please allow us some time to work it out.

I was not aware of Raddu. Thanks for the heads up Skerrit

Regarding the 2 secret faction missions. They are both found in Tyrrany in Phlan and require rank 2+ Harper or Lords Alliance to participate.

That's it. There aren't any more secret missions at this particular time - outside of Epics that is (I cannot confirm if the Epics have secret missions as there are no cons in my area. The closest being in Vancouver)

Not only that but the secret missions amounted to slight detours from the main plot and took up all of 2-3 pages.

Why is it Wednesdays only? It's not like any part of it is time sensitive.

Um... how does this cripple you? You can run Expeditions, Hoard, and Rise without any problem (providing you have store sponsorship). The only thing you won't be able to run (because of your indicated schedule) is Wednsday night Encounters - which is a limited-version of Hoard.

If you don't get store sponsorship (and do not hold your event publically), you are limited to Home play - which is Lost mine, Hoard, and Rise.

Not seeing a problem here. Find a store willing to host the event. Pick a night that works with your schedule. And run it....

As many of us have said previously - Secret missions have yet to be implemented (outside of a single Expedition module).

Have a little patience and allow them to be implemented. We were originally told that Secret Missions would be implemented next season. The fact they implemented early is a good thing. I still expect them to be primarily an expeditions thing, although you might see them in Princes of the Apocalypse as well.

I realized I will have a hard time convincing any store "near by" anyway. Just because there is no store I am aware of within a 50 km perimeter around my location, who has any D&D product on a shelve. There are no D&D reteilers whatsoever.

You cannot use the milestone mechanic when playing Rise of Tiamat as an AL game. You would need to calculate the XP awarded for each combat separately. I have already asked for clarification as to what non-combat XP should be awarded, but as of yet we don't have any answers. Until we do - the answer is zero non-combat xp.

We cannot make anything ourselves. You would need to rely on the published adventures and modules. The Expeditions modules require store sponsorship and must be played at a public event. Private games are limited to the three published adventures (four as of next season).

Regarding the question as to why Encounters has to run on Wednedays: WotC says so.

D&D Encounters is a WotC program; as such, having it run on Wednesday is seen as part of the program -- much like Friday Night Magic is a program that runs on Friday nights. WotC markets the program as being a Wednesday-night program, so that's when they want it run.

(Note that Encounters was not part of Organized Play when it started; that decision came later.)

From the dndadventurersleague.org site:

Wizards of the Coast has put a lot of effort into letting folks know that D&D Encounters can be found at many local game stores on Wednesday nights. Your store can benefit from the increased traffic generated by this effort by scheduling D&D Encounters on Wednesday nights

We understand that there are many reasons why a store may not be able to host D&D Encounters on Wednesday nights. If that’s the case for your store, you’re more than welcome to run Hoard of the Dragon Queen (which is the full adventure that D&D Encounters is based on), on any day of the week as a “Casual D&D Event” in the Wizards Events Reporter (WER)

I don't see why, if you're so concerned about the secret missions (of which there are only two, and only for two specific factions, and only in one adventure, and none of them actually DO anything for you at this point), you don't just put together a local group that can run DDEX 1-10: Tyranny in Phlan with AL-legal 5th level or higher characters.

It's not that hard to do!  You said you'd run and/or play whatever AL/WotC gives you anyway, so why is this such a big problem?

You can run an AL non-home-game Expedition session outside of a game store. It's a little more tricky to do, and there are some requirements on them, but it's far from impossible or even difficult.

"Lastly, if you don’t have a store that can sponsor you can contact customer support by filling out this support form. Be sure to select D&D Convention Support under the products drop-down as well as all other pertinent information. Once sent off, you may qualify to receive a Convention Support Package. All materials in the support package are delivered digitally, and are not for distribution outside of event use."

The Adventurers League campaign is still very young, and we are discussing alternative distribution methods - as much as we would like to make every adventure available to all players/ DMs globally, this is a brick-and-mortar focused program, and we have some hoops to jump through before we can really say "YES!  We're gonna release ALL THE THINGS!"

If anything, it's the prevalence of internet access that has, in my own opinion (and not related in any way to my current AL position), mandated that we focus on the brick-and-mortar.  Games like D&D are social by necessity, but the increased number of online discounters has made if difficult for many physical stores.  Without those physical stores, we run a very real risk of losing a significant player and DM recruitment avenue.  By pushing the Expeditions to the store level and releasing the printed, "for-sale" adventures for home play as well as stores, we can maintain a very real reason for players to hit up their local venue... and it's more than just getting the magic item certificates.  Not everyone needs or wants to trade items, but they have a very real need for more players and DMs.

tl;dr:

Man, I want to push adventures out to the public too but there are many other factors to consider. :/
