A while back (few months??) we had a thread about Find Steed... what folks thought would or would not be appropriate.

Someone posted a 'formula' that I really liked, but forgot to bookmark.  Does anyone happen to remember what the formula was? Or have the thread bookmarked?  (My searching on this sight is not the greatests...)

Second issue......  What is stopping a Paladin from Finding a Worg or Blink dog (assuming halfling Paly)?  I had assumed the spell call for a beast...but it doesn't.  If you are allowing an Elephant, why not a Winter Wolf?

Because Blink Dogs, and Wargs are not beasts from the Monster Manual (Appendix A). As per the FAQ entry - you must choose from the legal target(s) from your allowed rules. Only if you are unable to find a target(s), can you then use the DM Basic Rules or the rest of the Monster Manual.

There are plenty of "steeds" in the Allowed Rules (PHB Appendix D, and MM Appendix A). As such, you cannot choose a blink dog or a Warg..... Elephants are legal, subject to DM approval however.

There is a link to a thread in my sig which lists all legal creatures for AL summons.

This thread was used as the basis for the FAQ entry on the AL Wiki and is largely identical (with the exception that the Wiki lists each entry by spell/ability, where as mine is sorted by creature type).

Thanks....  turns out that wasn't the issue.  Worg and Winter wolf *are in* the allowed rules (PHB), which is what caused my confusion.  Turns out I kept skipping over the parenthetical phrase in Find Steed that specifically calls out summoning other "animals"

The major issue with Find Steed is what one DM permits you to summon isn't necessarily going to be permitted by another DM.

The formula I use is increasing the allowed CR of the summon by a factor of 2 for each increase in spell slot level.

Level 2: CR 1/2 or lower

Level 3: CR 1

Level 4: CR 2

Level 5: CR 4 (or specific options at CR 5, depending on Paladin type)

For Bards (or other multiclass casters that have the spell), I would increase by CR 1 for each additional level.

Level 6: CR 5

Level 7: CR 6

Level 8: CR 7

Level 9: CR 8

If people ask for something not on the AL legal list, I'm likely to grant it and simply remind them that other DMs will probably not honor that choice, simply because Find Steed feels much more open ended than the specific summoning spells, and I feel experienced enough to decide if it's going to break my game or not, at least in local play (where I know most, if not all, the players).  At a Con, I would stick strictly to the list.
