| #1ErjohnsAug 01, 2015 11:58:37 | I have a Tiefling Warlock who thinks that the 5th level cleric spell Contagion should be allowed for a warlock (makes sense to me anyway). My question is could downtime be used to research that spell, if so how much and how much of a financial hit as well?
If this weren't AL I'd just go through my DM but alas it is league and a ruling is needed to budge him.

The Warlock has other unique things, such as their their spell slots that renew on short rest. It may completely break the game if the Warlock is able to cast Contagion 2-4 times between short rests. |

| #7VulfAug 03, 2015 0:05:01 | I read the tweets Mearls and Crawford from last year, when asked why it hadn't received an errata they belligerently claimed that the spell never states when it takes effect.
The SECOND line of the spell states "On a hit, you afflict the creature with a disease..."
Then: "After succeeding on three of these saving throws, the creature recovers from the disease."
Are they implying that the creature suffers from the disease for 3 turns, except doesn't actually suffer from the disease? They say they never made an errata because they assumed people were all using it correctly.
When reading the spell description, it looks like it says the creature is afflicted with the disease when it is hit. The creature will have to make a saving throw at the end of its turn, and if it fails a total of three before succeeding on three, then the condtion will last for 7 days with no more end of turn saving throws. I believe any reasonably prudent person would read it the same way.
A spell that takes 3 turns before your party receives any benefit from it is not a spell you need a 5th level slot for. You need spells that have immediate benefit when you use them in combat. In 3 turns, the enemy can be dead by other means. |
