"The optimum mix for a group is 9 characters of various classes, with an average experience level of at least 9th, and armed with 2 to 3 magical items each."
- quote taken from the CAUTION: to DMs in G1 - The Steading of the Hill Giant Chief, by E. Gary Gygax
It should be noted that an 'average experience level of at least 9th' suggests, by AD&D terms, a party with roughly 200k-250k XP; the fighters would be 8th level pushing 9th, the clerics 8th or 9th level depending, the wizards 9th level pushing 10th, and the rogues comfortably 10th level. A similar amount of 5e XP would put a party roughly at 16-17th level. And Gygax has to remind the DM that the party should have 2-3 permanent magic items each!

What is the point of your post?
Are your trying to defend the current magic item system?
If you are... that is a bad position because the system is broken as well as horrible.
I could illustrate but I would not want to bore you with a number of points that support the notion |
