| #1shaterbaneApr 26, 2015 9:20:30 | Would haggling over the price of a puchased item in play be considered using a house rule for AL purposes? |
| #2reddaemonApr 26, 2015 10:18:42 | Generally, haggling with NPCs can be done if the module specifically mentions it (there are several instances where this is mentioned in adventures). However DMs are empowered to change an adventure to suit how the table is playing. So if your group goes off the rails, the DM is free to reshape the adventure to accomodate that. If you mean to do routine shopping from the PHB I would say as a general rule, no you can't haggle. |
| #3Coredump00Apr 26, 2015 13:27:09 | You are getting into an iffy area.... You are not allowed to 'add treasure' to the adventure. Is allowing item costs to be reduced the same as 'adding treasure'?? Seems pretty close. OTOH, what if they missed some treasure because they avoided a fight instead of killing? Then you are not 'adding' treasure, you are just 're-arranging' it.
Plus, the point of the game is to have fun, and really.... gold just isn't that important. My advice is to only use the haggling if it is fun for the players, and try and keep it reasonable. If they want to all chip in and get a bulk discount on silk rope.... who cares if it ends up being 8gp instead of 10gp. They were smart, worked together, and had fun. Now if at 2nd level they 'haggle' the price of Plate Armor down to 250gp.... thats kind of an issue.
And, of course, I would avoid allowing for commerce. No haggling silk down to 8gp, buying 100 sq yds, then going somewhere else and hagglling/selling for 12gp. Use it for flavor, not for gaming the system.
Of course, if you want to do more of it.... you can just 'dock' their other treasure. They got thier horses for 50gp each, but by the end of the adventure, you have reduced the found treasure by 25gp each.

| #4UndrhilApr 26, 2015 16:59:21 | I get tired of PCs "haggling" over the price the NPC is willing to pay for the reward. It's pointless since it's a fixed price in the mod, yet people still continue to do it and waste time. |
| #5KalaniApr 26, 2015 17:54:19 | If it helps - simply set the asking price higher than the fixed price. That way PCs who want to haggle feel like they have accomplished something.
If if they don't haggle - increase the treasure award accordingly so that it becomes a zero sum |
| #6abanathieApr 26, 2015 19:15:30 | The one that irritates me is the DM that states you can't buy anything between my last adventure and "his" current adventure. And then charges 75gp for a potion of healing. I'm sure it's completely legal at a AL table, unlike past OP campaigns, but it is something that is open for abuse by the DM. |

| #9NoonApr 27, 2015 2:27:05 | Really wish they'd just put in a treasure budget for a DM to draw from if they so choose, instead of this absolutely rigid treasure/soup nazi 'add nothing!' policy. |
| #10shaterbaneApr 27, 2015 8:01:37 | I was mostly wondering because D&D (every edition that I've played going back to the little tan books) is about the only RPG that doesn't have it in the RAW that list price in the book is simply a starting place, and that prices will vary from place to place, and shopping trip to shopping trip. I want to run this Encounters season by the book, but I've already got people rebelling against playing that way (including two other DMs who insist on house ruling AD&D2 and 4e rules into 5e, as well as old Dragon rules articles from as far back as 1980, and the store owner who only wants the points for the store and absolutely cheats while playing and DMing). (sorry, had to vent that last bit, ignore if desired).
I've just got a couple of players who are happy with the RAW but were wondering if they could haggle down the purchase price of a sword or set of armor by a few gold. |

| #17shivafangApr 27, 2015 15:53:38 | Had a player haggle for a important clue item in a module. It said that he'll sell it for 50GP or 25GP if they are a harper.
I let him roll persuade to take it down to 40 with a good roll (roll of 22) - since there were no harpers in the party. They *could* have had it for 25, so it's kind of a split difference in my opinion. |
| #18SpedGuyApr 27, 2015 18:29:04 | I'm a cleric of Waukeen, it is a religious obligation to haggle every time! |
