Haven't done Organized play in a long time; questions.

I haven't been to these forums in a long time (since early 4E).  I'd like to play at GenCon; how do I distinguish between an AL game and a non-AL game?  Or are they all the game AL games?  I have my DCI number, will I need that?  I'd prefer to do AL but it's been over 10 years since I was involved in Oraganized Play or any kind of living Campaign so I feel kind of out of the loop.  Thanks!

Also, you will need to be familiar with the OP guidelines. If you go to dndadventurersleague.org you will find all the documentation you need. In particular - your character must abide by the rules for AL as defined in the Adventurers league players Guide (v2.0) and must have a logsheet (your table DM can provide one if you lack a log sheet)

I'd like to play the 5th level adventures but I don't have an AL 5th level character.  What are the rules for making a new 5th level character for the purposes of the convention?

There are not any.  Its not Pathfinder where they provide a Level 1, 4 and 7th level Pregen character. If you dont have a character who can play in a 5-10 level game , then do not pick a 5-10 level game to play in that particular slot at a convention.

 

Remember however for 20 downtime, you can autolevel a character from 4th to 5th instantly after a scenario. So you may want to look to do that if you want to get a 5th level character for the convention. Considering its 2700 exp for Level 4, you are still going to have to play a fair few 1-4 scenarios. I equate it to around 6 scenarios maybe in 1-4 to get to 4th.

 

Also keep in mind its difficult in AL to come back from the dead after you lose access to the Faction Charity.  So if you are going to play your 5th level character make sure you have a sturdy number of characters and abilities for your level 5-10 table.
