| #3Talos_DragonAug 05, 2014 15:31:37 | Morthos - Tiefling Paladin
Morthos Mother died in Child Birth and was found by and adventuring group dispatched by the Church of ____. The birth was aided by a cleric and a paladin of ____. With the Mother willing to Die so child may Live and the child having committed no evil. The cleric and Paladin decided to bring the child to their temple to have the high priests decide its fate.
Luck for Morthos that two High Priests, (Reginald and Mortimer) was having one of their 'famous' debates and Nature or Nurture deciding the path of ones soul. HEre they have the perfect proof. An Infernal Child with no 'human contact' except with a cleric and paladin. It was decided that the Child would be a ward of the church and raised on the temple grounds.
As time went on and Morthos grew. It was learned that he did not have the patience for the priest hood but his energy and focus made him a great candidate for the paladin-hood. WHen the priests had a vision of Morthos being the avenging arm of their god, HE was enter in and found to excel as a Paladin.

Waiting for book to see of oath of vengeance or Oath of devotion will be his path.
Quote "You may either throw yourself on the mercy of the city guard and have the law remove you from society. Or I can remove you. I must warn you, my way is permanent." (Would the quote be better for Alexi above?)
Need help looking for appropriate GOD/Temple and maybe situation of his birth)
Fit in with Order of the gauntlet?

Morthos, Order of the Gauntlet works for him. For his background, use clerics of Ilmater. For his current deity, use Tyr. |
| #5TyranthraxusAug 05, 2014 18:16:07 | Generally when Im building a character, I try to learn as much as I can about the setting he/she will be playing in. As suggested in the back of the AL master document, you might want to look at some older sourcebooks (Ive been reading and re-reeading the Moonsea a 2e book for a while now). Its got a lot of sure outdated information in it, but a plethora of older families in it (good for names) locations, secrets and so on.
For the Phlan based Expeditions, Ive been thinking about creating Orelius Cadorna, a very remote descendant of Poryphyrs Cadorna
who was a councilman of Phlan many ages past. Orelius is moving back to learn more about his family's past and to help Phlan now. Now a native of Waterdeep, he respects the rule of Law and what it has accomplished to help people overcome the spellplague and survive. He has decided he wants to move back to Phlan to establish the family name there again.
(Im looking at a Lawful Alignment.. probably Neutral and a Wizard.. a Transmuter or Conjurer when they become available)
*****
Just keep in mind that when building for an established area, dont go down the path of having a character be sent to X to study under a Priest of Sune if there is no Cathedral/Temple to that God at the location.
From the notes on Phlan we already know that the only Temple capable of performing Clerical magic is the Kelemvor One (God of the Dead). THere ARE shrines to Auril and Umberlee but they are only shrines and its stated that they do not provide Clerical services. |
| #6PauperAug 07, 2014 12:00:15 | @Talos_Dragon Interesting backgrounds -- though I'm not sure Lawful Evil really fits the 'break the law or try to bribe the lady guard and get marched off to jail' personality you're describing. I'd see a Lawful Evil person as perfectly willing to be bribed or allow law-breaking as long as there's something in it for them, too, especially if the law-breaker is a superior officer or someone else with actual authority over the character. (Not to mention that, for someone with so much tragedy in her background -- family killed, adventuring company betrayed -- she doesn't seem to be holding many grudges, which I'd also associate with a Lawful Evil character.) She really seems more Lawful Good, based on the description, though you could probably also justify Lawful Neutral.
I agree with DM_HEEGZ that Baldur's Gate seems ideal for the city her group went to ground in after their betrayal -- joining the Flaming Fists is a long-standing tradition for abandoned adventurers.
There are tons of minor noble families in Cormyr, and lots of marauding monsters to wipe them out -- that seems like a reasonable home region.
As for Morthos, the debating high priests thing sounds ideal for clerics of Oghma, the god of knowledge, assuming there's no restriction that prevents Oghma from having paladins.

| #7tallric_kruushAug 08, 2014 5:10:27 | Regarding "Alexi Darkmoore", I'd look at making her a native of Amn or Tethyr. In the "Lands of Intrigue", one noble (or powerful merchant) house taking down another is not out of place.
Her flight to safety could take her to the nearby island of Mintarn, a well known hidey hole for people looking to lie low or start over. Coincidentally (okay, not so coincidentally, it's by design), Mintarn is famous for its mercenary companies. These mercenary companies just happen to be working a major, long term job in Neverwinter for Lord Dagult Neverember, where they serve as the defacto city watch.
So, you have your origin story rooted in the Realms, your mercenary connection rooted in the Realms, and your presence in the Sword Coast North clearly explained. Neverwinter is a great place to which to tie a new character. It's a place where many power groups, including all of the ToD Factions, are represented. |
