Hi

I am playing the new D&D season in my local store and I am having some issues in which i kindly ask your help.

I was very excited waiting for the new Tyranny of Dragons season in particular and D&D 5.0 in general. I am helping my local store to organize the encounters, expedition and forming some new play groups (mostly as a DM). I even have a regular long term D&D 3.5 campaign running with some old friends of mine in home play.

However I am having the difficulty that I find the new rules for the Adventures League a bit confusing and the information scattered across a lot of different sources. Even the Adventurers League rulebook brings some nice compiled information in a section, and then goes on in a different direction, without finishing the first idea before opening new rules and directives and restarting to the first idea without being much conclusive. If I am being unjust, I am sorry.

It is not, that I am unhappy with the new edition and play season  (I am loving it!!!!), the problem is that, since I am helping to organize the events, everybody asks me their doubts and questions and although I answer the best I can, there are stuff I still struggle to understand and to give the correct answers. And in this, I am adamant to play by the rules and kept things as official as possible, although the possibility of me going to an official wizard’s event or convention (like the epics) is smaller than the chance my character will find a holy avenger longsword in the dumpster.

I will do my best to keep this from forming into wall of text, so I will try to keep it as small as possible:

A) what is the purpose of asking my players to apply for a DCI number?

B) I also play Magic but when I go to my DCI page I find no reference for the D&D game, even though my local store is using the official program to create D&D events. What is the point of the DCI in D&D? At least in magic I can choose from some cool wallpapers and collect achievements online.

C) If there is no official page to register information, what stops a player from inventing a Character Log sheet and presenting me a 4 level character, although that person could have never played a single RPG session before? Since D&D is noncompetitive, it is a minor issue but when we play and advertise in public stores, there is always the chance to some random guy drops by and start disrupting the game for everyone by power gaming or whatever. OFC as a DM I can always ask the person to leave (me or the store organizer) but if there are some better tools to help us....

D) Is the hoard of dragon queen supposed to be fully finished (the 8 chapters) by March? And then when is it supposed to play Rise of Tiamat? In both cases I am referring ofc to D&D Wednesday Encounters.

E) Again if there is no official page to record events, what stops a play group to play the full HotDQ in a couple of weeks, playing let’s say every day? And if they do, and everybody is happy with that, what is the problem or prejudice for the Adventures League?

F) What is all about the renown stuff? I haven’t seen yet anything about secret mission or advantages ingame of being a high level in a faction. I simply love the all idea and see a lot of potential in it, both for storytelling and to captivate players, but I was unable to explain its advantages to the players without having to use the words "in future releases"... Maybe I overlook something...

G) I am mostly DM but I manage to play now and then. With the new DM Rewards rule I think, I might even manage to create a nice playable character, something I was wanting for years. However I am unsure if I am applying the correct decision and rules.
Better than to ask theorical questions, I will ask for help in reviewing my character evolution and checking if everything is correct.

(Minor spoilers possible from some of the modules)

      I) my character played the first 2 adventures in Defiance in Phlan in an expedition event.  Since he is from the harpers faction and all objectives were achieved in those adventures I gain 1 renown point (from the harper guy in one of the adventures) and 100 + 100 XPs plus 5 + 5 downtime days. So I end up with a level 1 char with 200 xps.

ii) In another expedition (shadows over the moonsea), we arrived at the island and had to stop there. The DM awards us 100 xp each. No downtime or renown because the adventure wasn’t finished but with 300 xps my characters is now level 2.

iii) In my encounter group on Wednesday, we finished chapter1 (here I am the DM). I award the party the 300 cap exp (they had gain more xps than that) and 1 renown point to everyone (plus downtime). Since I was the DM, I use the DM rewards rule to give my character more 300 Xps, 10 downtime days but no gold or renown. It is now a Level 2 character with 600 Xps.

iv) I was invited to play in a Starter Lost Mines of Phandelver as a player. We finished the first chapter and we all got 430 xps. Does my character also earns 1 renown point for finishing the chapter? Now he is a Level 3 character with 1030 xps.

Am I doing this correctly? All was recorded in the sheet together with the DMs DCI. I am asking this, so I can help all the people that ask me the rules for the league, so I am not misguiding anybody.

To finish, I would like to thank all the guys that are doing such a great work with the new D&D 5.0. I wasn’t so excited about D&D in particular and RPG in general for a lot of time now. Thanks guys.
