How does Casual Play transition work?

More or less what it says in the title. How does the transition from D&D Encounters to Casual Play work exactly?

Does it not take place if you are using the print book to continue and keep holding the session on wednesday nights? Or does it happen automatically when you reach the end of the AL pdf version of Princes of the Apocalypse?

I'm quite new at being an organized play DM. (General DM experience goes back to '82).

You are only running Encounters if you are running the first 3 (4?) episodes of PotA on a Wednesday night.

You are only running Expeditions if you are using one of the Expeditions modules (on any day)

Casual Play covers LMoP, HotDQ, RoT,and Episodes 4 (5?) through 15 of PotA** on any day; or if you are running the first episodes of PotA on any day but wednesday.

** I have not actually looked at PotA since we are still playing ToD, so I am not positive how the episodes are numbered, but I hope you get the idea.

PotA is divided into chapters. The main campaign covers 3 chapters (chapter 3-5). The pre-campaign (for level 1-2 characters) is found in chapter 6, as is a variety of side quests for the main campaign.

AFAIK, each chapter covers 2+ "episodes". Chapter 3 for example is intended to take PCs from 3rd to 6th level.

Encounters is comprised of the chapter 6 "pre-adventure" (encounters part 1) and part/all of chapter 3 (encounters part 2)

It covers 4 "episodes" and awards a total of 40 DT and 4 renown.

So, for example, if I'm DMing at a single table store (small town), once we finish the pdf version, we're finished with the Encounters season, regardless of if we keep playing the rest as Casual Play or not?

The reason I'm asking, partially, is my understanding that Encounters has to take place on Wednesday nights. Does the casual play take it's place? Or should we keep that slot open for any potential new players (not too likely)?

Hmmmmm.....

Well, I guess if a couple of RCs are saying it, they got it from the admins.  It just goes against what I heard from a WotC guy on a podcast recently.  Of course, I may have heard wrong, or it may have changed even more recently. (Podcast was recorded a few weeks ago).

Not sure if I like the change or not, but also pretty sure my approval isn't key to the process.   In any case, thanks for the update.

Edit: Hey,  you edited your post.... that really confused me for a minute....

So, if I understand the responses correctly, the only time you'd 'transition' from Encounters to Casual Play is if you're no longer running your AL-legal content on a Wednesday night.

If you're still running Princes, or an Expeditions adventure, or any other AL-legal content on 'Encounters night', it's Encounters.
