How far can we go in HotDQ?

Our AL group has beeing doing HotDQ on Wed nights and we just got to the end of episode 4 right outside of Waterdeep. There is some confusion about whether or not we can continue on as as were were doing. Out GM does own the adventure and according to my understanding of,

D&D Encounters. This program involves playing
weekly, short sessions set in the Sword Coast at a
local game store. It uses a special complimentary
digital edition of an existing for-sale adventure product
for the entirety of the storyline season (available to
participating stores). Play typically starts at 1st level,
and after finishing a few levels of play, groups can
purchase the remainder of the adventure product to
finish their story.

You can play all the way to the end, you just start reporting it as Casual Play for the store, instead of Encounters. I do not believe you are forced to level up if you are just playing through HotDQ. That rule more applies for those who are playing through the expeditions adventures but have run out of 1-4s to play and want to move to the 5-10s.

It seems strange that they would make such a large adventure that they don't want people to play through as Encounters. Why didn't they just make a bunch of 1-4 level Encounter adventures like the did for Expeditions?

OK, thanks for the info.

 

I was just wondering about our official game and what would be changing.  We want to continue on and into Rise of Tiamat unless that one requires new characters.

My wekend group is thinking about a game once colledge football season is over.

RoT does not require new characters.
