How important is timeline

So I'm contemplating attempting to run the Hoard of the Dragon Queen adventure at my FLGS. I've been PCing the past two weeks but the style of the DM isn't exactly what I find enjoyable to play in, so I figure I'd rather DM a different group rather than PC. Playing in a Forgotten Realms game with a Paladin of a madeup "God of Milkshakes and good deeds" and two other clerics who are worshipping non-FR dieties immedietely kind of puts me a bit out of sorts for immersion.

On the plus side, our FLGS is apparentl yseeing a LOT of interest. I've been told they've had more people coming in for encounters then they've had in quite some time. Last week they were running 3 tables of 6 players and actually ended up turning away another 4 people who showed up but couldn't get seated. So initial popularity in my little neck of the woods looks good

So here's my question. How impactful does the "timeline" you're playing the FR in for this matter?

I loved running and playing in the realms in 3e and know a fair bit about it in terms of the various cities, organizations, gods, etc. For me, having a consistent and identifiable world that I'm playing in as a PC (and that I'm running as a DM) is fun and helps the immersion.

Would it cause a lot of issues if I ran the game largely going off the timeline of the 3rd edition FRCS? Specifically as it relates to the gods and the majority of the sword coast region?

If it would, Is there any kind of crib notes out there in terms of the SIGNIFICANT changes to the world between the end of 3rd and the end of 4th? I know there's no FRCS out yet for 5th and nothing really planned as of yet, so I'm kind of stuck on how to deal with this. I know a bit about the Spellplague, Maztica being replaced with a different contingent from Toril's "twin" and such...but I'm really not nearly as up to date on it as I was with 3rd.

We'll have to wait for the Fifth Edition Forgotten Realms Campaign Sourcebook for all the details, but from the details already releaased, a lot of Third Edition-era stuff has returned: Mystra and Helm are back as deities, Aumanator has gone back to being Lathander.

I suspect the module will contain a lot more information on the changes between editions.
