In Store Season 2 Kick-Off Party - Would these ideas be allowed?

I'm one of the DM/Coordinators for Adventure League at Common Ground Games in Dallas, Tx. We have had a great first season. The store is relatively new and hadn't been doing any organized D&D activities until about October. We started out with 2 Encounters tables and then added a Sunday Expeditions table. We have had a waiting list for some time now and are planning on adding two additional Wednesday night tables and hopefully a 2nd Sunday Expeditions table with the ucoming Elemental Evil season. It is very exciting for our growing little community.

Anyway...we were thinking about having a Season 2 Kick-Off party the Wednesday before release of Season 2 so we could have some additional social time and welcome the new players (I have already been running character creation clinics with most of them). For this event the store owner is going to order pizza and the DMs are going to have a special themed cake made. We may also have a few door prizes (dice, discount coupons, etc.).

What I was wondering is if it would be allowable to give away a few very low level magic items (+1 rings or protection, +1 weapons, maybe an ability score bump, etc), or would this be unallowable under Adventure League rules? I'm hoping that there might be some leeway on this...but we want to make sure that we are following the rules.

Does someone in the KNOW have an answer to this?

You definately can not give out magic items or ability score bumps.

That is what I figured...but thought I would ask. I'm sure we can come up with some other things.

While I can see why a store cannot just decide to hand out magic items or ability bumps the basic idea of parties to kick off the season sounds like a good idea. Perhaps for season 3 the AL could consider putting together packets to allow stores to do just this.

This wouldn't be all that different from things such as the Tears of Bahamut that were handed out to players at the start of season 1. It could either be done in place of those items or (my choice) would be in addition to those items.

You say you have Expeditions on Sundays?  Do you have a website that you use to sign up for these events that you could post for me? :P

While the ALPG legality may be a grey area... you could probably do less permanent things. Like give away an Inspiration token, or a 'divine guidance' token or something like that.

At Strategicon in LA, the organizers do something like a scavenger hunt; completing part of it gives you the opportunity to roll on a table of benefits. The more items you find, the bigger the bonus on your roll. The prizes range from stuff like a one-use d4 or d8 to add to a roll to a faction folio. None of it's unbalancing, and it seems to work well.

Also, Chessex does custom dice for a really affordable price. Give away some d6s with the name of your store on the 6 side, and everyone who gets one will always associate your store with good luck.

We have actually already thought of giving away Inspiration points at the event. We thought that was a great and easy idea.

I love the idea of the Chessex custom dice. I went to their website and you are right....very reasonable. Would cost less than a dollar a die. Unfortunately, I don't think they would be able to get them to us by next week. BUT....that doesn mean we can't do that next season.  lol

I'm pretty sure that the store owner is going to come throug with a few discout coupons for new product...but we will just have to see.

I'll make sure to post some pics from the Party on the Adventurer League Facebook page.

Now if more Game store could do similar stuff it could be great, Can you contact my store owner in Cornwall (Canada) and show him your sales bonus from such an event to show him it's worth it lol

Only problem with custom Inspiration Dice from Chessex is that you step up to d8s at 5th level. I too have thought about this....
