Languages and Poisons

Two quick questions

1)  The PHB says you can pick and Exotic language with "DMs permission".  Is there an AL stance on this?  Can we pick an exotic language or are they verbotten? I can't see it depending on our 'first' DM to decide.....

2) I seem to remember something new about poisons.... but I can't remember if it was even AL related. So....  Besides the generic Poison, Basic listed in the PHB, are there any other poisons available in AL?  Are there any we can make with a Poisoners kit?

2) Carrion crawler mucus and serpent venom are both available as illicit goods for mid ranked Zhentarim players in expeditions.

What about languages not in the PHB (Modron; Giant Eagle; etc)?

There is no issue pauper. Page 3 of the ALPG clearly states the following:

  • Players Handbook (all rules except.........)

This means that exotic languages, variant humans, and feats are all legal. If an exotic language is found anywhere in the PHB, it is legal as the contents of that book (cover to cover) are legal with the exception of rolling Stats/HPs.

Crafting poisons would be covered by the crafting rules on pp. 187 of the PHB. Specifically, to craft basic poison it requires:

  • 20 downtime days
  • 50gp
  • Proficiency with poisoner's tools

You're limited to poisons available within player resources, however, which means only basic poison unless you get a cert from somewhere else.

As a DM, I might make let you whip up a makeshift version of one of the DMG poisons that loses potency after an hour or two, but that would be an in-game exception, not a rule applicable everywhere.

I don't see anythng in the Allowed Rules that let you pick any Giant Eagle as a known language.  p.123 details what languages you can pick, just because another language is listed as existing, doesn't mean it can be learned by a PC.

For what it is worth the list of languages in the MM is:

Blink dog, bullywug, giant elk, giant eagle, giant owl, gith, gnoll, Grell, hook horror, Modron, otyugh, sahaugin, slaad, Sphinx, thri-kreen, troglodyte, umber hulk, winter wolf, worg, yeti

rangers can get a language for any racial enemy but ooze if they use this list (and who hunts ooze?)

Can a ranger with a racial enemy learn a language they speak if it isn't on the AL list (golem Hunter speaking Modron, there is no other speaking golems)?

Or what if it is on the AL list but no 'example' monster speaks it (like... A plant hater, treats speak a variety of languages but are not in 'player material')?

Speaking of Druidic and Thieves' Cant, the PHB lists those as options alongside the Exotic Languages, saying that they are acceptable with DM approval.  So if human can learn Primordial as her bonus language in AL, she ought to be able to take druidic.

Makes sense, though does leave Construct hunters (and a few fringe humanoid hunters) losing out on languages (which probably won't get used anyways).  Although.... Isn't there a bullywug in one of the Encounters that no player can speak to with this system?

I generally rule that only characters with the appropriate class features can take those languages, but yes, a DM could interpret the rules for language acquisition to allow that.

I mean, both Druidic and Thieves' Cant are described as 'secret', and a language that just anybody can take isn't very secret.

This is a good idea. I'll see what we can do.
