Making a character - question on background

In the PHB, the section before backgrounds is about 'Customizing Backgrounds"

Is customizing backgrounds legal for Adventure League play?

 

My instincts say yes, because it is not labeled in a side bar as "variant rule" (and if it were a variant rule, then it would need explicit okay in the Adventure League guide, like it does for the human trait variant rule)

 

But the fact that it says "customize" is making me second guess myself.

 

Anyway, just thought I'd ask to make sure I wasn't doing anything wrong ....

Yes Customising backgrounds is legal.

 

My future DM Credit Rogue, Blackleaf has a Criminal background but I didnt like either skill selection suggested so Im modifying that to be something else.
