Minor issue with starting packages

While building a character with the hopes of it becoming one of the official pregen characters, I ran into a small issue regarding starting packages.

Small Fighters

The starting packages for the Fighter class include:

  • (a) chainmail or (b) leather, longbow, and 20 arrows.

I suspect that most small fighters would be Dexterity based and would therefore prefer the leather armor. This poses an issue regarding their starting equipment:

  • Longbow: Disadvantage on attack rolls due to the heavy trait.
  • Chainmail: Disadvantage on stealth checks.

Small fighters are forced to take one of two bad options, which does not seem fair. Was this intentional or an oversight, and if it was an oversight how should we address this issue in AL.

The simple solution IMO, is to allow the small fighter to sell their longbow (25gp) and purchase a shortbow instead (which costs 25gp).

By RAW, this option would require the character to wait until they get an opportunity within the adventure (or with downtime). They would not be able to sell it prior to their first session and this seems silly.

I have not gone through all of the starting packages to date to see if there are other similar issues.

I fail to see why you couldn't simply allow them to make the sell before their first session?

Also, it's not necessailty small-size fighters who will take that option.  Elves are Dexterity-based and are medium-size.

The fighter option should have said something like the following in order to not penalize any characters.

  • (a) chainmail or (b) leather, and your choice of a longbow or shortbow, and 20 arrows.

Considering you can sell the longbow (50gp) and buy a shortbow with the proceeds (25gp), there's little need to add to the equipment list just for AL purposes. Simply make your players aware that selling starting gear and buying different gear is still a thing, but everything purchased this way still counts as 'starting gear' if the character retrains.

That is what I did when making the pregen (I sincerely hope it wins). I sold the longbow, purchased a shortbow, and then sold the crossbow (and bolts) for 13gp (26/2)

Coredump, it's not necessarily the admins or WotC making this into anything.  It's DMs who are overly cantankerous about following the letter of the rules.  Those DMs who want you to mark on your character sheet that you used 3 arrows and only retrieved 1 (or who assumes you don't retrieve any unless you specifically ask to do so.)

And, on the off-chance we're about to go wildly off-topic talking about quivers, I'll point out that I have the great good fortune to game with a bow hunter. Most quivers hold only 5 or 6 arrows with 'back quivers' (quivers worn over the back like a backpack) holding about a dozen. A 20-arrow quiver all by itself is ahistorical, though this is a fantasy game.

When it comes time to ignore number of arrows, that's when I make the obligatory 'quiver of endless arrows' available to the party archer.

I'm reminded of a comment regarding the old 3.5 'peasant railgun', where folks suggested that having 500 or more 0-level characters standing in a line, each readying an action to pass an object handed to them to the person in front of them, with the first person in line readying an action to throw it, would allow an object to be accelerated to such a speed (through the entire line in less than 6 seconds!) that the resulting projectile would have the kinetic energy of a nuclear missile.

The comment was, paraphrased:

These things happen when

a) your DM allows real-world physics into your game, and

b) nobody at the table including the DM knows how real-world physics work.

My Greyhawk Reborn character is an elf nature priestess. I bought me a dog and got a pack harness, and slung two quivers off him -- in addition to the one I carry myself.

I have animal handling and speak with animals, so I can usually count on my quiverdog to do what I want him to do.

(sigh) This thread has me quivering in fear of more bad jokes. I'd better bolt home before it gets any worse. I see only a n arrow chance to get away.
