Mulmaster Backgrounds AL Legal?

Are the Mulmaster Backgrounds AL Legal?  http://dndadventurersleague.org/elemental-evil-bonds-and-backgrounds-for-mulmaster/

One would assume they are as they are on the Adventure's League website and posted by an AL community background, but this is not referenced in the ALPG as a player source.

I've told my players so far that the Bonds are and all the background stuff is (since you can customize backgrounds) EXCEPT for the actual 'Background Feature' mechanic until I get a confirmation.

It would have been nice if the article specifically says that this material is AL Legal (or not) or if the ALPG lists the AL website as a Player source.

Since that very page says you can choose them for a character from Mulmaster.... that seems pretty explicit.

It would be pretty odd to have the AL website say you can choose something, but only allowed for non-AL games....

A question about those Bonds.

Are the people listed from the lore, or are they just folks that will be mentioned in the various adventures.  IOW, are the names provided because they are somebody (head of the watch, famous adventurer, notorious wizard, etc) or are they just ways to tie us into the various expeditions etc. (such as Zora Culkin)

You can always create your own personality traits, bonds, flaws, etc (as stated in the PHB). You are not limited to the ones on the list. You are however, limited to features from the available backgrounds.

As far as the Mulmaster Backgrounds are concerned, they were released on the dndadventurersleague.org website. As Mulmaster is the site of Season 2 Expeditions, it stands to reason they are intended for use in Season 2.

For those who are not aware, these variant background features can also be used when customizing one of the other backgrounds.

Yes the Mulmaster Backgrounds are very AL Legal. As one of the authors of the backgrounds I can assure you that we wrote them specifically with AL in mind. The names mentioned in them are to do with AL and will be mentioned in some of the adventures you will come across during the Adventurers League within the Expedtions scenarios.

Thanks for answering my question...

At first I felt like I was supposed to know who these people were.... then I saw the one person I did 'know' (Zora Culkin) and thought it might just be adventure tie-ins....... cool idea, I like it.

They don't look like new features. It seems like they're more specific or flavorful versions of existing features. They even list which feature they're based on.

If we're going to use a strict interpretation of the ALPG:

The variations are not listed under the EE Story Origin's allowed sources, therefore the only way to use them would be if they were treated as "Official Documentation." (which is an allowed source in both ToD and EE)  I'll assume that since they were posted on the AL website this is sufficient to reach that status;  however, this also means that new ToD characters should be allowed to use them as well.

Mainly just posted to let ya know that any new content like this needs to be specifically stated as an allowed source "somewhere."  You can't have specifics on one-half and then be lax on the other.

@Ravix - There will be articles that we post from time to time on the site that are not officially supported, as they fall squarely into the 'editorial' field.  Other times, the content will be considered 'official'.

When we post an 'official' article, like the one with the Mulmaster backgrounds, we blast out that news to our Twitter, Facebook, and Google+ pages.  This saves us from having to make awkwardly-phrased entries in the Player's Guide along the lines of "You can also use dndadventurersleague.org articles for new rulings, except for some of them.  But some others, sure!" ;)

Robert and I are always open to finding new ways to highlight this sort of information, and we will likely be tweaking the way the resource download page appears and operates several times over the next few seasons as a result.

Also, it does clearly state in the PG that the Administrators are authorized to make rulings about the campaign and rules... so here you go: I'm an Administrator - the Associate Community Manager, actually - and I'm saying that you can indeed use those backgrounds!

What do you think about adding a small picture like a seal or sticker or something that marks a blog as containing DnDAL legal material?

That sounds like a good plan, if:

a) the entire article is AL-legal material for players, or

b) the article can be sub-divided so that the sections that contain such material are obviously differentiated from the editorial/'fluff' sections.

I too think a sticker system could be implemented, however I also think that the article itself should also have a disclaimer stating "the content contained in this article is legal for characters of the X story origin" or "the contents of this article are legal for characters of any story origin"

I've updated with an AL Legal image and added some text indicating they're legal for characters with the Elemental Evil story origin.

Thanks Robert. That should help clear up a lot of confusion.
