Mulmaster Undone

Did anyone else play in the Mulmaster Undone AL event at Origins over the weekend? This was my first epic play for the AL, and it was a blast. We played in the Earth section, and apparently were one of the few there to finish the first part successfully.

Without spoiling anything, I really dug both the time limits and the random guy wandering between the tables, doling out elemental complications. They added a real sense of urgency and excitement.

I was also in the earth node.

It was ok.

I've seen much better especially in multi table interactions. To me, this was just a timed crawl with a few extras.

I had a good time but not so much more than a regular expedition.

We did ok, just flew the orb far out to sea (although maybe that was bad) given the fire result.

Quick question... How much is Mulmaster actually "undone" in this epic? I ask because another recent thread inquired about an updated map of Mulmaster, and I was thinking of taking on the task. However, is the damage so extensive as to need a before and after?

(suggest replies get the [ spoiler ] treatment)

Haven't played it yet, but will at GenCon. I'd really like to know what about it warrants that $14 price tag. It's only on the schedule as a 3-hour game, so it's not like we're paying for an extra-long game (on the contrary!). Other than bragging rights, is there something else we get out of it that we couldn't get out of a standard $4 -- sorry, $10 D&D AL game at GenCon?

They give good magic items, treasure and XP.

I can't speak to DDEP2, but I did playtest DDEP3 and it gives out a minimum of 900xp (track 1), 4500xp (track 2) and an unknown minimum for track 3 (the min XP was listed as xx in the playtest)

Its the chance to play in an adventure that directly affects the story line and will rarely run again, if at all.

My only issue with Conventions. Well okay one of them is that essentially the player is subsidising the DM's in this case, and in turn this leads to people who perhaps shouldnt be dming, simply applying to dm at the convention so they will get in for free/cheaper.  The conventions I have been to have also been pay per session (or pay a flat fee).

That form is not an AL form, it is however the old (maybe current), form the Herald's Guild user at BMG run conventions

Every D&D game I played in at Origins gave out that form at the end. I thought it a great idea. I really wish Shadowrun’s organized play had done the same. The difference in quality between AL and Shadowrun Missions was pretty huge, alas.

Without giving any spoilers - the DDEP3 Epic (Blood Above, Blood Below) has interactive elements in which one table, can call for assistance from another table. If another table volunteers, it takes up one of their characters actions but allows something "special" to occur in the table calling for assistance... .There are also opportunities to borrow a PC from another table (reducing the size of that table, and having the PC join you for the length of one battle).

Finally, depending on the success of the low and high tier tracks, the final battles are scripted as either/or options.

  • Success - and you fight your tracks BBEG. Failure, and you fight an alternate (and more difficult) encounter instead..... Success is determined by determining how many tables succeed at their objective, and if enough do - the mission is considered a success. As such, even if your table succeeds/fails - there is no guarantee that the mission will be considered a success/failure overall.
  • The difficulty of the Track 2 final encounter is dependant on the success/failure of Tracks 1, 2, and 3 combined.
  • Characters risk permanent death in these missions (with all dead characters risking their very soul on the outcome). Should the final mission fail, the souls of the dead are lost (requiring a true ressurrection or wish to be revived iirc).
  • However, with great risk, comes great reward (which I will not spoiler).

Even more so than an expedition, each of the three tracks runs simultaneously, and is strictly timed - giving players very little opportunity to waste time before acting (else they increase the risks of failure at their respective table).

To my understanding yes - but I have not had the opportunity to play (or test) it so I cannot speak with authority as to what it contains. The point of the Epics is however, to have such interactive elements making it distinct from other games.... They also tend to bring something fun to the table you don't always see, such as unusual mounts and other nifty options.

I used to be an RPGA judge back in the 3.0/3.5 days.... That brings back memories. For those who aren't in the know, you needed to pass a rules knowledge test in order to qualify, and you could only get one question wrong.

It was because I was an RPGA judge that I was able to secure (and run) the 4E launch event for World D&D Day back when the game first launched.

DDEP2 was a rerun of the Origins Epic, not a first run.

The difficulty on DDEP-3 changed when the high tier group failed at GenCon (we fought 2 incubi rather than 1 in mid-tier). DDEP-2, I don't think anyone failed so the adventure didn't scale (at least for mid-tier). If anything, we cruised through that one pretty easily (the shark encounter on water track was challenging but the Hydra wasn't.) Mid-tier didn't get options to ask for help from other groups - apparently only low and high tier had access to that.

In terms of rewards - both epics give 2 really good magic items, about double gold, and around 6K xp for mid-tier.

At Gencon, my table blew through the fire cult portion. It all felt very...hectic? Which was good at times, but not at others. I kept feeling like we were rushing at the cost of good gameplay. It was still fun, though.

Meh, They lost their harbour and another part of the City. Phlan lost ... itself. I consider Mulmaster had a 'win'.

Where adventurers gather death follows. I suspect Thentia, Melvaunt, and Zhentil Keep are preparing to bar the gates.
