No Magic Item Certs in AL Expeditions

I played in DDEX1-5 this weekend at a large game store tournament. and was awarded a magic item.  However there was no cert available for it, which means I will never be able to trade this item.  The organizers of the event, which had over 30 participants and does so on a consistent basis, said they have not had support from Wizards in some time.

Needless to say I'm pretty disappointed at this lack of support.

The item in DDEX 1-5 has a cert, if the store scheduled its Expeditions events in time to receive it.

My guess is that the store didn't, and based on the off-hand comment by the original poster, is accustomed to that. It's too bad, because the players are the ones who suffer.

Ring of Fire Resistance.  It was the designated magic item reward for the adventure.

The event had been scheduled for weeks with very competent management.  It's possible they didn't register in time but there were other players at the table who had played in earlier tournaments at the store who had certs, which indicates the organizer knows what he's doing.  However the organizer told me that they had not seen support from Wizards in a while, so that's what I'm concerned about.

If the store is running older adventures that are not in the kits right now (i.e. DDEX1-5) and did not sign up for the referesher kit that had all certs from 1-2 through 1-10 then it is possible they (the store) ran out of certs. There are no old kits at WOTC. They old kits are sold out. If the store is registering their events and getting no support at all, it sounds like a problem with the way they are registering it. They should call customer service. All the stores I know are getting certs.

You're not always going to get a cert, that's just the reality of the situation. We have played and replayed all of the Expeditions, Starter Set and HotDQ so much at our store that the certs dried up long ago. When I got the refresh pack last week, I had so many folks without certs that they almost all got passed out as soon as I opened it. Our store is exeptional with the amount of games we play, but the point is that you shouldn't look at the availability of the certs as a barometer of the level of supports that WotC is offering for DDAL. They send out enough certs for a day or two of events for an adventure and that's it. You can't excpect them to provide certs every single time you decide to replay an adventure.

My opinion is that they need to do away with the certs all together. They are a pain for us organizers, they eat up funds in the program that could be spent on things like maps and other materials for the adventure that would actually impact the gaming experience, and they are completely unnecessary in the first place. As long as you put the item on your log sheet, you're good. The ONLY purpose they serve is the off chance that you wish to trade the item with somone else. How often does that happen? Not enough to justify the cost of producing them in my opinion.

Good to know, Spykes.  I thought the tourney was well run and the game content first rate.  It was my first Expedition but I've been doing Encounters for a while now.  The item itself is helpful but I was disappointed to not get a cert.  To then be told that the store hadn't seen certs in some time was a concern to me.

I agree about how cumbersome the current system is.  Nothing else I've encountered in AL is as clunky.

No the purpose of certificates is solely to allow trading. In the other thread people (rightly or wrongly) are suggesting that DMs should police their players and call some one out if they have something very odd (such as a large number of items in a low magic campaign). You do not need a cert to have an item.

If you registered for Expedition games in Feb, then you should have received the refresher kit since there were no new adventures for this month.

I don't actually believe in certs.

I think people who say they get them are just making them up.

In LFR, certs came with the adventure and if you didn't get one, you could just print them out. That worked. This thing, where some select few do exactly the same thing as everyone else and for no apparent reason also get this bonus? How does that create a healthy OP community? What exactly is the incentive?

If you are truly interested in getting some fan made Item cert things to hand out for players, I would suggest the AL group in Facebook. Someone there made a rather nice one for some of the Expeditions scenarios that slightly mimics the appearance of a 'cert'. Obviously its not tradeable and thats spelt out in rather large letters on the cert. But at least its something.

February WOTC package had certs from DDEX1-10 iirc. Check with the LGS and see if they received it.
