| #1Bob_no_OniApr 13, 2015 14:52:03 | Greetings again folks,
I am sorry to ask so many question but I am trying to get an interesting and unusual character idea that most people haven't normally see. As such, what deities from the list in Appendix B have you not normally seen someone take for their Cleric to worhsip? Even some of the Demihuman/Nonhuman deities would be cool. Just trying to do something different, and come up with a good character background reasoning for it. |
| #2SpedGuyApr 13, 2015 17:03:16 | My forgotten realms favorite is Waukeen. Grab an economy 101 textbook for your holy book and go to town.
'Should we kill the dragon? Yes, it's horde is badly invested and needs to be redistributed to boost the local economy'
'Should we kill the slavers? No, the underdark agrarian economy would collapse under any other labor model!'
'Can you get a heal? Sure, let me grab my abacus to figure out the party member discount first...'
'Pray the lady's invisible hand guide you'
'So we demand, and so she doth supply'
'May all your consumers be perfectly informed' |
| #3BRJNApr 13, 2015 17:38:59 | - Nobanion (not on the 5e list) is a god of Nature for carnivores. He accepts that you have to kill something to eat it and sustain your own life, but takes offense if you eat only the choicest parts and leave the rest of the meat / body to rot. - Milil and Lliira - the gods have a Bard, too ! And a happy party girl. - Chauntea is almost unplayable, due to her portfolio (agriculture) does not lend itself to adventures. But she should be a part of any pantheon. - Eldath for the kind of Cleric who waits outside guarding the horses until the (banged-up) heroes come out of the dungeon. - Nobody has ever seen a Cleric of Leira (illusions), but that may be because they are pretending to be somebody else. - I'm waiting upon the favor of Savras (divinations) to answer my spell / prayer and show me where his Clerics are to be found.

| #4TyranthraxusApr 13, 2015 18:50:55 | There is a Cleric of Auril who occasionally turns up to my local expeditions games. (okay twice so far). Both sessions he has played his character as pretty aloof and hesitant to heal anyone. He was always asking if it was Winter in Phlan yet.
There is also a Paladin of Bahamut who is a regular on my tables of Expeditions (and now level 6!). He is pretty just most of the time but has had some really good faceoffs with the servants of Tiamat!
I have a Cleric of Beshaba (CN) Who is slowly getting some DM Credit. She believes that it is her role in life to make sure people remember Beshaba as their can be no good luck without bad luck. |
| #5UndrhilApr 13, 2015 20:14:21 | I think a cleric of Chauntea would be a burly farmer type who swings a scythe (once 5e has those) and wades into combat with phrases such as "Time to harvest the chafe." and "It's all fun and games until the corn ears are plucked." |
| #6TyranthraxusApr 13, 2015 20:24:15 | What characters do you currently have made up that have seen game time Undrhil?
Does anyone particuarly like playing very religous characters in rpgs or is that a little too close to reality for some of us? |
| #7UndrhilApr 13, 2015 23:36:04 | Actually, I have no real Clerics. In our HotDQ game, I have a Dragonborn Warlock (of Bahamut) who took a level of Cleric in an effort to be more attuned to his deity, but that fell through rather quickly and he continued gaining levels in Warlock thereafter.
In this season of AL, I am going to be running a Water Genasi Tempest Cleric of Deep Sashelas. He was brought up by sea elves (I always forget their actual name) when he was found off the shore of the Moonsea, near Mulmaster.
My Gnome Paladin | Wizard, who I haven't actually gotten to play, worships Oghma.
My Halfing Monk worships Torm.
I am considering a Half-elf Bard who worships Ilmater and is very Goth, for next season. ;)
And as for others playing "religious" characters. The role-play that can come from someone actually exploring the religion on their character is mind-boggling. During the playtest, one guy had a halfling Cleric of St. Cuthbert. When he used Spritual Weapon, he summoned a giant ale mug and smacked bad guys over the head with it. I have seen a Dwarf War cleric of .... not Moradin, who is fully into the "war" part of the War Domain, constantly trying to get into fights. There was a Paladin at MegaCon this past weekend who was a LG Paladin of Lathander who carried a torch around everywhere, switching out for a weapon only when combat was evident. I suggested that as soon as he could, he should find a higher level Wizard to cast Continual Flame on his shield. ;) Also, he was in the habit of waking up before the sun came up so he could watch the sunrise while doing his morning prayers. |
| #8randlApr 14, 2015 8:28:14 | I play a Nature Cleric of Eldath and I don't stay back and tend the horses. He has a more proactive approach in dealing with those that will disturb the peace. He does have the tendancy to Spare the Dying on the enemy and not chasing down those that flee.
My Vengance Paladin is a CN Halfling that follows Mask, God of Thieves. |

| #10Storyteller-ZeroApr 14, 2015 22:42:59 | I'd like to see someone manage to pull off a good performance as a cleric of Sharess. Hedonism and pleasure? Hmm hmm. |
| #11TyranthraxusApr 14, 2015 23:41:54 | Storyteller-Zero: Some Deity choices can lead to awkward silences in games and moderation when kids are playing. |
| #12warfteinerApr 15, 2015 7:54:39 | I actually enjoy it when people pull out Gond or even Finder. Makes me giggle |

| #16TyranthraxusApr 15, 2015 20:25:23 | No. Not in AL. LFR towards the middle and end basically threw open the doors to FR and invited everyone in to the Beach party. Hopefully the admin of AL are devout enough to maintianing setting consistency to avoid that despite all the pressure that will be brought to bare. |
| #17warfteinerApr 16, 2015 13:20:15 | I think you're in good hands, Tyranthraxus. We do not have any plans to make the Realms 'weird' any time soon.
(though I do love me some kender) |
| #18TyranthraxusApr 16, 2015 19:06:10 | oh.. I dont have any fears you guys would 'go off reservation'.
In fact I thought thats why the admin staff were volunteers and not WOTC staff and sorta had a division there so you could say 'no' if WOTC asked you to include everything they produced. Like it was always planned that way.
I also like me some Kender. Esp when he was walking the streets in Sigil. |
| #19imaginaryfriendApr 16, 2015 22:05:52 | Everyone and everything looks better walking the streets of Sigil..
So Admins? How about it?
AL Season 3: Pain be a lady tonight
it has a ring to it.... |
| #20TyranthraxusApr 16, 2015 22:08:07 | If you have read the latest D&D article about the future of D&D and products, you will have noticed that everything for a long time to come will be FR.
In fact it wouldnt surprised me if next season we are in Hillsfar then the season after in Zhentil Keep and then working our way around the moonsea eventually getting back to Phlan.
Also as Expeditions older scenarios are still playable for a long time to come, having a season set in Sigil but everything else not would be silly. |

| #22imaginaryfriendApr 17, 2015 8:00:56 | Not convinced that even with a doomsday device Moradin, Mystra and Paladine could survive the fallout of an attack on Sigil. The lady is a pretty potent adversary to start off with, but more importantly there are a lot of interplanetary beings that enjoy having a neutral watering hole around (see what I did there? |
| #23PauperApr 17, 2015 8:30:24 | Eh, you are arguing the canon of a setting with someone who despises the setting -- it frankly makes no sense to me why any sensible being would care about the fate of a bunch of goth wanna-bes, much less ones with an overinflated sense of their own importance because they happen to have been created in an area that can be considered 'strategic' by people who can't tell the difference between a four-dimensional multiverse and a two-dimensional continent.
But rather than take this thread totally off-topic as a 'why does everyone love Planescape so much' thread, I'll just leave my personal opinion out there and have done.

| #24imaginaryfriendApr 17, 2015 8:51:32 | hehe taste is taste and yeah no use debating it except for laughs.. The way you feel about Planescape is how I feel about the D&D Twilight edition known as dragonlance... |

| #27SterlingRatApr 17, 2015 10:47:36 | In 3.5 I played with the idea of a good cleric of gruumsh on the idea that I worshipped him to prevent him from becoming angry and causing disasters. I could never get it to work from a RP perspective... it's really kind of a one PC story that the rest of the party joing him on and it sucks to be that player. I'm just glad I was playing with friends and not strangers. After 3 sessions, even I didn't want to play with me any more. Tossed him out and played a fighter. I don't recommend trying that to anyone.
I've made a wizard that worships Amaunator - he believes that answering prayers and providing divine power for spells is taxing to the power of the gods, so he refuses to use divine magic and trained to be a wizard instead. He believes Amaunator's death was intended as a lesson to his faithful that they needed to learn how to live on their own. So he's a religious character that isn't a cleric. If I could play more, I would probably play him.

| #30Bob_no_OniApr 20, 2015 11:08:29 | I thank everyone for their input. I was wondering on one certain deity now. I was wondering how often you have seen someone play a Painbearer, a Cleric of Ilmater? I was thinking of doing a Half-Orc Cleric of Ilmater and was wondering how often it has been seen, preferable by people playing Organized Play. |
| #31KalaniApr 20, 2015 11:13:32 | The clerics of Illmater show up briefly in at least one of the S2 Expeditions. |
| #32BRJNApr 20, 2015 14:57:07 | In LFR, I never saw a cleric of Ilmater played. A handful showed up as NPCs whose job was to show the PCs the local need for Heroes. I was in one party that could have used it (presumably mechanical simulation via a Pacifist Healer). We were in a Battle Interactive where the DM had prepped for CR8 but our party came in at CR6. Everything was a big bag of HP with tough defenses and a nasty punch.
|
| #33TyranthraxusApr 20, 2015 17:23:00 | I played a Cleric of Ilmater in a 3.5 FR game. Was quite cool. He actually lasted a year, which was 6 months more than everyone elses character |

| #35UndrhilApr 25, 2015 23:17:16 | Except ... the ALPG says you can only take a deity from the PH deity list (Forgotten Realms or non-Human deities.) |
| #36OraibiApr 26, 2015 19:15:23 | My ale nun is a cleric of Chauntea. With Chauntea being a goddess of the grain, she has a number of monasteries that are also breweries, with attached taverns. Ninkasi's was wiped out in an attack by the Cult of the Dragon, so she strapped on armor, picked up a shield, and went forth into battle.
She throws beer steins at people and has a bag of holding with a barrel of ale in it.
