I've got a group of players that is completly new to DnD that I'm running the Lost Mines campagin for. So far everything is completly Adventure League legal, except I haven't had them fill out logs yet(with only 2 sessions that's easily done) and one other thing. The group is at the minimum number of players, but unfortunately one of them is on call for work a lot and can't make it occasionally. So I've rolled a character to help balance the party and allow them to keep going for a little while if she isn't there. This character is ONLY participating in combat and not in any social encounter(don't want to give them a direction). He is also taking his share of the treasue and experience.

Is is this league legal? It's not likly that my friends will be going to a store to play or even most conventions, but if they do I'd like them to have the option of having legal characters to take with them.

The DnDAL has no rules to support this sort of situation, but on a personal non-admin level, I think sometimes you have to make your game work first. There are plenty of times while playing D&D when an NPC comes along for the ride. In fact, I played at a table when other players wanted to hire mercenaries to come with us. We even explored the cost of that option before we just decided it wasn't necessary but our DM was rolling with it, so it could have happened. Just remember that having that NPC around lowers the party's xp gains from combats since its dividing by one more ally.

It has been. Both xp and loot. I had to explaine to them that otherwise they'd out pace him and he'd no longer be helpful. They understood, but wernt eager to share the gold with him.

Anyway thank you for the input. When I get  HotDQ in a couple weeks I'll see if we can't run it completely official until then they are actually happy to have my human barbarian around
