what I don't understand is that wizards wants to extend its influence get more players playing, but yet u don't allow online play there are some great tools out there to do this and get as much fun and excitement if not more, but al rules don't allow it. How does this make sense? My home group has broken up due to a couple of moving out of state and our two dm's have created a system to allow us to play and just not allow those pc's to participate in league play! Which is bull **** ! These two two dm's judge multiple sessions at gen con every year , but it has to be them to create this! What the hell? Wizards lets embrace the new millennium ! Use the tools that are out there and bring all those new players into the game and create a renewed vigor for this great new system you have created!  Get ur digital tools done and get ur **** right! You have created a great foundation , now let's build something great ! Embrace technology and use it to ur advantage ! Go forth and conquer ! And make AL legal online !!!!!!

Actually, we have been moving towards allowing live streaming events. We'll see how that shakes out in the new rules that come out shortly.

I appreciate that some people have limited options locally, or for whatever other reason cannot join a physical table of likeminded players. But I like that WotC is fostering community and direct interaction. It's what's going to keep our hobby alive, IMO. No one wanders up to a VTT and asks, "What's this? What are you guys playing? It looks interesting."

Look, I've done VTTs myself (and PBP, and Skype), and they're cool and all in a pinch. But this thing we do is, and should always by, IMNSO, a social game of people interacting face-to-face, dice in our hands, and a corny accent on our lips. That WotC understands this and does what it can to nurture the experience is a good thing, AFAIC.

So happy to see that the leaders of Adventurers League are considering this! The more times, places, and ways to play, the better. There is a certain critical mass to keep campaigns like this vibrant and alive. I look forward to helping it grow in person and online!

On a personal note, I have friends from across the country that have come back to DnD through online play of the Starter Set and Tyranny of Dragons. They are loving it and want to continue with Expeditions adventures when they can.

On a second personal note, I game with a group with a longtime friend of ours who can no longer get out of the house for medical reasons. We would be so happy if he could join us for Expeditions games!

Thank you and please expand online soon!

but remember that WotC want to help the gaming store where they sell there product, so bringing AL online, might encourage some people to stay home. Why would I drive 10 minutes to get to the store and sit on a plastic school chair instead of staying in my big comfy chair in front of my computer. This way I even save on babysitting fee (if I stay home no need to hire a babysitter)

I'm would LOVE AL to go online, but I feel like WotC will be very cautious so they don't hinder the physical store.

Just curious... if they can't leave their house, why do they care about adventure league?

Adventure league benefits seem to be:

Drop in games if you don't have a group

Drop in games if you travel a lot

Travel to conventions and game

Now, even assuming there are people that can't leave their house and really feel a need to take part in AL.... they seem to be such a small number that it seems odd to make large design choices only for them.

Yup. And as already been stated, there are already AL games being played online. They just aren't "sanctioned", per se. If someone isn't ever going to a pick-up game or to conventions, as you say, what's the issue? They are playing the mods. They are (presumably) enjoying them just fine.

Let's look for the positives. The more ways to grow the hobby the better. I volunteer to judge at Winter Fantasy and at GenCon, I play and judge in-store games, I play and judge online games and I play and judge at home games. I have judged for first time players in all those settings. The more ways we can bring new players into this game the better. I just don't understand why that would be discouraged. Let's work together and grow this hobby and not argue about why we should limit it.

Also, keep in mind that Expeditions are for public play, not necessarily in-store play. So it is primarily to get new players, not necessarily to support stores. Although, I will not argue that it has a big beneficial effect on stores, and that is why I judge at stores too.

Finally, Expeditions adventures are perfect for pick up games and online games where players come and go. They are episodic, so if the same party does not show up next time, that is ok. And we all enjoy the heck out of being part of a big shared world campaign.

So in closing, lets make this thing grow, in all possible avenues!

Good gaming!

To the Admins:

Thank you so much for allowing streaming online play to count as public play!

Not all streaming online play is public play -- if your stream doesn't allow 'the public' to discover and ultimately join your stream, then it wouldn't count as public play.

Twitch, Google Hangout on Air, etc..

Basically just needs to be streamed in a public place, it doesn't have to be a public game.

The game also has to be open to drop in participants on a first-come, first served basis. The event must also be advertised in order to qualify for Expeditions and the like. Otherwise you are restricted to playing Lost mines, Hoard of the Dragon Queen, Rise of Tiamat, and Princes of the Apocalypse.

Looks like the intent was just for public viewership of the game, not necessarily open for them to play in.

I expect this will be touched on in the FAQ as well.

I was referring to whether you would be eligable for running Expeditions modules via online play.... It appears the intent is that online play functions as an extension of home play and functions by the same limitations on adventure choice.

So, I am giving this a shot. See this thread for the announcement: http://community.wizards.com/forum/dd-adventurers-league/threads/4193516

Not sure we will want to have those announcements on this message board.

Moderators? Thoughts? Maybe make a new sub board?
