Online supplements and Basic Rules

Hi,

Just a curious question here:

 

I am wondering why WOTC took the decision to release separate online supplements, rather than rolling them into the Basic Rules -- or even better -- just to include them in the two published adventure books (HotDQ and RoT).

 

Does anyone know why?

for HotDQ it's because event organiser (mainly the FLGS stores) received a PDF file with the first 3 chapter of HotDQ for FREE, but didn't include the item in that module, so made them available on the website. Then they add more spell description in that document, so spellcaster using only the free basic rule, are receiving some extra spell option not included in the free basic rules.

 

Then I would guess that as a player, you can go see the supplement and when you see that there is a staff of fire that is super awesome staff, you might go ask your DM to buy that book (or buy it yourself) and now your group can play it and you have a chance to get the item that you wanted... untill you realise that the NPC holding the staff is suppsoe to run away and is VERY diffcult to prevent from fleeing.
