Out levelling DDEX1-1 (and DDEX2-1)?

I am being told by my DM that if I have a character run through DDEX1-1 (or DDEX2-1 if it's setup the same way) and that character started with 600xp from running through another mod first, that I would only be permitted to go through three of the missions and once I reached 900xp (level 3), I wouldn't be allowed to complete the other two missions in the module.

Is this correct?  Where is this spelled out, other than that the mod says that only characters of level 1 or 2 can actually participate in the mod.  Since I started it at level 2, am I not allowed to complete it in this case?

If you level up to 3 during the adventure you cannot continue, if you don't level up until after sure.

I guess I'm lucky.  I just played four of the five in DDEX1-1.  That means that I should be able to play all five of the DDEX2-1 mini-adventures.  (900xp - 375xp = 525xp).  And to the OP, you might get more than three.  Sometimes a group won't be completely successful.  My DDEX1-1 adventure just happened to have a bad party combination for one of the mini-adventures, without going into it too much.  It was, in my opinion, close to a disaster because of the types of characters involved.  We didn't get full XP for it.  I wouldn't count on it, and I think the most, unless your group tanks one, is four in your case...

Look at it this way

Say you play Defiance in Phlan with a fresh level 1 character with 0 exp.You play mini missions 1,2 and 3 in your 1st session. So at the end you work out you got 300 exp all up. So you are level 2.

On your session sheet you would write Defiance in Phlan: Mini mission 1,2 and 3

This means you can still play mini mission 4 and 5 with that character (assuming of course at the later session that character is still level 2).

Now lets say you have 700 experience and have yet to play Defiance in Phlan at all.

The session starts and you complete mini missions 2, 4 and 5. You gain 100 exp each from those session and whilst you would of had enough exp to level to level 3 after 2 of the missions you dont actually level to 3 until AFTER the session ends. There is no level up between mini mission 4 and 5. You are level 2 until the session ends.

This is why it is VERY important to record what mini missions you played in Defiance and Phlan (and so for the new 5 mini mission scenario). You cannot repeat the same mini missions with the original character, however you CAN complete the ones you didnt get a chance to do so before.

My trip through Defiance in Phlan (at Winter Fantasy), our DM handed out XP, GP, Renown, &c at the end of each mission.  But we were pressed for time, so nobody did anything with it until the time slot was over.  I leveled-up - and equipped - my character after I got home for the evening.

@Pauper:  Yes you can level up after a long rest, but if you wait to give the XP until the end of the adventure, or end of the session... then the PCs don't have enough XP to level during the long rest.

This is simply a non-issue as DDEX1-1 lacks sufficient XP to reach L3

At the end of each mini-episode it lists the XP, downtime, Renown and DM rewards for that mini-episode. This shows clear intent that XP, etc are indicated to be awarded at the end of each mission. With that being said, each mission awards a maximum of 100XP, meaning that the character will need to complete 3 missions to reach level 2.

After completing all 5 missions, the character will have gained a maximum of 500XP. This is insufficient XP to reach L3 even if they started at L2.

The only way a character could risk being kicked out of the mission by hitting Level 3 is:

  • If they started the adventure at L2, and had 500-800XP before starting the adventure.
  • If they had 0-400XP, the adventure awards a maximum of 500XP, and therefore - they would not hit level cap before ending the mission.

DDEX1-1 is also for level 1 and 2.

True, but the thing with DDEX1-1 and DDEX2-1 is that each of those mini-adventures are intended to be run in a single 1-hr session, so - if run as intended, the player has not wasted their time for the time slot they are intended to be run in.

If you ran all of them as a single 5 hr time-slot (instead of individual time slots) my advice would be different as follows:

  • Strongly recommend players begin play with a level 1 character. If they don't have one, offer them a pregen.
  • If the player really wants to play a L2 character, inform them that characters with 400+ XP will level out of the adventure before it is complete.
  • If the player has such a character, and they want to play the adventure with that character - inform them they will be required to use a second character to complete the remaining missions.
  • Alternatively, I would allow them to complete the adventure but gain no additional XP (as if they had hit an XP cap), although I am uncertain whether this ruling is legal by AL rules.

I would not kick them from the table, I would simply have them rotate in a different character at the end of the mission they level out of.

This is the same advice we are given in respect to characters that have hit XP cap in Encounters.

DDEX1-1 and 2-1 are different because they need to be modular, eventhough they are usually run at the same time.... because they *can* be run individually, and even in a 4hr block, you are not likely to get in all 5.  So the rewards are written to allow/encourage giving out rewards between each adventure.

If someone is using a 2 lvl PC, and is going to hit 900XP, just don't give out the XP each time, or don't have them level up.  It seems like a far better gaming experience than forcing them to stop playing, or forcing them to create/use an entirely different PC.

I just wouldn't allow them to level up if they wanted to continue.

The problem is that this would have to be applied across the board to all PCs at the table.  So, if there are any PCs that *want* to level up, since it's apparently assumed that you will, then all the PCs have to do so.  Which sucks, but I guess that's life.  If a character has less than 500 xp, it works out, though.

The problem is that this would have to be applied across the board to all PCs at the table.[quote]No it doesn't.  If someone is 1st level and wants to level to 2nd, let them.  If someone is 2nd and doesn't want to be kicked out of the adventure, then let them stay at 2nd.  No big deal, and everyone wins.

I mean, we are talking about 1 (now 2) intro advenures with no magic.  Let'em play.

Does it matter who's right or wrong? By RAW, my interpretation would have bee correct. But that is irrelevant as we have a confirmed statement by an admin contrary to the RAW

Can we get an official ruling that actually points to this applying to DDEX1-01?  My DM is being .... well, he says that the tread with Skerrit's post shouldn't apply to the x-01 mods since they are a series of 'mini-mods'.

Unfortunately, the DMs ruling is final for the session and your DM is correct by a RAW interpretation. Especially in light of this entry from the FAQ.

Undrhil: If you are ever playing in one of my games, you can use your 2nd nearly 3rd character in one of my 1-01 or 2-01 games.

It really just matters to me what level a character is when they originally sit down to play.

It really comes down to if the DM considers 1-1 and 2-1 to be a single adventure with mulitple parts, or considers it multiple separate adventures..... it could really go either way.

I would ask your DM if you could keep playing if you agree to not level up until after the adventure is over.  If he doesn't want to allow that, however.... there isn't much that can be done.  Maybe mess up one of them so you get less than max XP... :-)

As I quoted above Coredump, that is not an option. You must level up at the first opportunity. This is non-optional.

I think that cut and paste from September was actually about leveling out of HotDQ, but:

It all comes down to how/when you award xp. When you run it at a convention, you might run DDEX1-1 as all one adventure (where every day some new crazy thing happens in Freona's Tea House) and then just award xp/gp at the end. That way no one levels out. You might instead run it as a seperate mini-mod on five different nights at your local store and so you award xp/gp each night not knowning who's going to show up next time. In this case leveling out is a problem, but it also helps the 1st-level guy get to 2nd and be more survivable for the later missions. We are trying to be inclusive and player friendly, so the only choice the DM cannot make is give one person xp part way through but not give it to the others. If you give awards, everyone gets them at the same time.
