Possible misprint in latest cert batch

The pdfs aren't up yet so I can't verify this, but something about the latest batch of certs struck me as absurdly odd. One of the Tier 1 Expeditions had certs for two different magic items, while the Tier 2 Expedition had none. The certs are back at the FLGS, so I can't list the certs in question.

I noticed that when I received them and brought it to the admins attention within minutes (it's good to have the admins on FB speed dial lol). Robert confirmed that the second item wasn't in the playtest but IIRC was in the final draft.

The set I got had items for three adventures. Maybe you got a different printing?

I'll swing by the store tomorrow to double check what was sent. I have a few players who will duel to the death over one of the items in the latest package. I actually enjoy the diplomatic way of deciding magic item distribution. My players and I have agreed on a more parliamentary approach.

Declarations of interest are made and a primary vote is taken. I give each interested player 30 seconds to state their case, plus 15 seconds for each vote received. If an unanimous decision isn't reached afterwards, then we move onto magic item count. Any further ties are settled via d% rolloff, barring an obvious case of item sniping. Whoever is closer to my roll in either direction wins.

The only times that I make an executive order on magic item distribution are when one of the tied players is trying to deprive a player an item only usable by their character, eg. a barbarian trying to screw over the only warlock in the party at the end of a recent expedition. I'll gladly schedule a replay instead of dealing with the negative energy that comes from drama. My Expedition night has grown to three tables, so reruns are totally doable now.

I was confused. I thought we were talking about the next to last batch which also had an anomoly. I expect that I will see the new batch when I head into my FLGS tomorrow.

Good to know which item is misprinted. I'll make sure to relabel them for the right adventure. Since this is the third misprinted cert this season that I'm aware of, any chance of a cert errata list being added to the Magic Item FAQ?

Other than the three from this season, were there any misprints that I should know about? I'll whip up a quick unofficial list on Google Docs that can be added to Kalani's repository. If one already exists, point me in its direction so I can add to it when I spot a misprint. Being a bit of a rules lawyer has improved my passive perception when it comes to typos.

I know there was at least 1 incorrect (doesn't match the book) cert from HotDQ (Talis' armor is cert'd as White Dragon Scale Mail, is just +1 scale mail in the text) and there is an incorrect cert in PotA (+2 shield on the cert, is +1 in the book), there are at least 2, possibly 3, missing certs for PotA as well (+1 dagger "Reszur", +1 dagger, second Wand of Magic Missile (I've heard this is missing, but I don't know for sure)).

I feel like this topic has a bad possibility of turning into at least a partial magic item spoiler list, so I suppose we ought to be careful, since they really don't want that.

I agree that treading carefully is highly advisable while constructing such a list. However, this type of document is necessary for the long-term implications of misprinted certs existing in the wild. Some unscrupulous players may try to claim that their misprinted certs are legit when we're 3-5 seasons down the road from now. A partial spoiler list is the cost of correcting mistakes, but it's one made for the greater good of the program.

If you can think of any other missing/misprinted certs, let me know via PM. I'm all for minimizing spoilers, but damage control needs to be in place because I'm certain that these are not the last misprints that we'll see before the end of 5e.

As for the format of the list, I'm thinking of listing the items by cert id code instead of names. That would simply be followed by addressing the necessary changes in as few words as possible and avoiding the name of the item whenever possible. Here are a couple example entries:

  • EX020801: listed DC should be 10, not 5
  • EN020103: listed bonus and rarity should be +1 and uncommon, not +2 and rare, respectively

I never got the HotDQ certs at my store, so I don't know the code for the misprinted certs from there.
