what good is gold in 5e? ok the fighter can buy a full plate mail faster, the wizard need some gold to copy spells in his spellbook and do duplicate of his spellbook so he doesn't loose everything if he loose it'S spellbook in the adventure.

any benefit of gold for anyone else? the starter pack give you the weapon of your choice for your class, you cannto buy magical item, living fees (repair equipment, buy more ration, spell component etc...) are so low that they are easy to buy no problem with the regular gold income from the first group of random monster usually.

One could make a case about living expense if you want to live like an aristocrate at 10gp+ per day, but this is more RP then game mechanics, living as an aristocrate won'T give you more spell per day or a higher Constitution score.

From what I see Gold is more an RP thing then a mechanic thing. in Pathfinder and 3.x gold was VERY important because you needed it to buy your magical item, but in 5e the only magical item you can buy are potion of healing and maybe scroll.

Why not just play the game outside of Encounters, and do what you like?

I am very sure that the campaign can find uses for gold as the program matures. Previous campaigns had some neat ideas on this, including owning buildings and helping to shape what a kingdom would do.

And, no, you can't level slower under the current rules.
