Ok

I am a long time DM but new to 5th edition. (Close to 30 years of dming

So my problem was the characters have little to no choice at the begining  to escape... characters are suppose to sneak about... Fine - they can sneak to the Quaggoth pen or the watch room with 2 guards...

The only other path is straight to the cetral tower and an elite Drow... and 2 drow.

the only way to escape other than going through the armory is to leap to the webs and then into the water below.

I want to know what other groups have done.

My group was large as I am training DM's so there were 6 pc's - NPC's hung back and they took out the drow and the drow elite with 1 fatality and 3 knocked unconscious....

Also what is with the ubewr powerful adversaries....

You probably should put a spoiler tag in your post.

SPOILER'S AHEAD.....

This adventure is not for beginning PCs. It is a very difficult circumstance with which to begin an adventure. Our group was able to take out the central tower with only one PC unconscious, but it was tough. As far as the powerful adversaries, it is a Drow prison camp. Every single drow that is listed is exactly what one would expect to be at such a facility. PCs are very resourceful, however, and there are a ton of NPCs to help. In addition, we were helped out by the scarred male elite drow (not sure if the DM felt bad for us or whether that is written into adventure). He left the gate to our pen unlocked.

As a player, I found the beginning to this adventure to be a refreshing change of pace from the normal "you meet in a tavern" or "you are summoned by the mayor to help" beginnings.

Sarren, welcome to the forums.

You may not know that there is a way to "hide" the spoilery parts of your post.  At the bottom of any of the forum pages, there is a red link that says "More information about text formats".  Click on that link and it will take you to a page that explains how to format your post.  At the bottom of that page it explains how to "hide" specfiic information in your post so it can then be clicked to be revealed by those who want to see it.  Look for the last two entries:  (The image below is grainy).

Many many players actually read these forums, so it's etiquette to hide anything that might spoil everyone's potential fun and give people the option of reading the material or not...

Alternatively, I think it's possible for you to edit the title of your main post to include the word "SPOILERS" at the very beginning so potential players don't inadvertently click on it by accident.

I bet you'll find some answers to your question in some of the other threads if you do some exploring.  All of the WotC forums are notoriously hard to "search" so it takes a bit of time to hunt and peck for answers.

Show
The PCs are meant to avoid fighting the drow to escape. (or perhaps only fighting a few of them.)  Then they are meant to run away from them. Once they get to slublubland, they can get on the water and basically be free of the drow.
